She is the wife of Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, a member of the House of Savoy and the grandson of Umberto II, Italy's last reigning King of the peninsula.

She is best known by her maiden name, both professionally and personally.

Acting career

Courau was nominated for a César for Most Promising Actress (Meilleur espoir féminin) in 1991 and was named for Best Actress and Best Actress in Le petit criminel (1990). She then appeared in Dusty Hughes' A Slip of the Tongue, opposite John Malkovich on the stage, and in Vincent Ward's Map of the Human Heart. She received the Prix Suzanne Bianchetti at the SACD Awards in 1995. Both for the film Élisa and later in 1996, she was nominated for Best Support Actress (Meilleur second rôle féminin) and Most Promising Actress (Meilleur espoir féminin). She was named as one of Europe's "Shooting Stars" by European Film Promotion in 1998, and in 2000 she received the Prix Romy Schneider. On February 7, 2007, she made a Dame of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France.

She appeared in Deterrence, an American film about nuclear war, which marked Rod Lurie's debut as a director.
