Clive Francis (born 26 June 1946) is a British stage, television and film actor.

Early life

Francis was born in Eastbourne, Sussex. He is the son of actors Raymond Francis and his second wife Margaret Towner.

His father played Detective Chief Superintendent Tom Lockhart in the 1960s series No Hiding Place. His mother played Jira, Anakin Skywalker's friend, in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in 1999.

Career

Clive Francis began his acting career at the age of 16 in a weekly repertory as a Penguin Player at Bexhill-on-Sea, and has appeared on stage, radio, television, and films.

He is also a caricaturist, and he has appeared at numerous exhibitions at the National Theatre. His caricatures have appeared on the front pages of several books, including Blessings in Disguise by Alec Guinness and a biography of John Gield. In Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971), Francis appeared as Joe the Lodger. Inspector Clouseau (1968), The Man Who Had Power Over Women (1970), Girl Stroke Boy (1971), The Crown (2004), Kevin Turner, (2005), Official Secrets (2019), The Unknown City of Z (1968), and Dolittle (2020).

In the 1966 film In the 1966 film starring Tommy Traddles opposite Ian McKellen, he was his first television appearance.

Francis recalls his appearance in Entertaining Mr Sloane in 1968, his first memorable television appearance, alongside Sheila Hancock and Edward Woodward. According to him, the film was shot just a week after playwright Joe Orton's assassination.

In the BBC's 1971 production of Sense and Sensibility, Francis played Willoughby. He appeared in Poldark's first appearance (1975–76), portraying Ross Poldark's infant, struggling, and debt-ridden cousin Francis. He played Det. Sgt. In 1974, Dexter was born in New Scotland Yard. He portrayed Apollodorus opposite Alec Guinness in George Bernard Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra (1976). In Sunday, Francis appeared opposite Laurence Olivier in a play that was part of the Laurence Olivier Presents series for Granada Television. As Colonel Windham in Sharpe's Company and May to December, Francis appeared in the series The 10%ers; The Piglet Files (which, as noted above, used his caricatures in the credits).

Francis has appeared in scores of other television programs, including Yes, Prime Minister, in which he played Luke, the Prime Minister's spy for the Foreign Office, which is often in conflict with the PM's policies.

On Your Collar, his television appearances include: The Rear Column, The Critic, Pierrepoint, New Tricks, and Lipstick. In 2016, he appeared in Lord Salisbury's Netflix series The Crown.

His first West End appearance was in There's a Girl in My Soup, opposite Donald Sinden. Since then, he has appeared in more than twenty West End shows, including The School of Scandal, The Importance of Being Ernest, The Reception of King George, Single Spies, and Inspector Calls.

'Tis Pity She's a Whore, Never so Good, and Les Blancs' appeared at the National Theatre in a Small Family Company. After marriage, Troilus and Cressida, as well as A Christmas Carol, Francis appeared in Three Hours on RSC.

He specializes in a one-man adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, a collection of exhibits that he has taken from France to Ireland, Monaco, and several major towns and cities in the United Kingdom.

Clive Francis has also taken from the page to the stage from adapting A Christmas Carol as his one-man performance, Three Men in a Boat by Graham Greene, Three Men in a Boat by Graham Greene, and Susan Hill's The Small Hand. Alice the Musical! was adapted by author Charles Miller and wrote the lyrics to the Alice in the Wonderland version.

He appeared in Frank Doel's production of 84, Charing Cross Road, in February 2015. In 2016, he revived a performance at Cambridge's Arts Theatre.
