Early life
Claudia Maria Schiffer was born in Rheinberg, a small town 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) northwest of Duisburg, on August 25, 1970, to mother Gudrun and father Heinz Schiffer (1937–2007), a lawyer. Stefan and Andreas are her two brothers, as well as Ann Carolin, who was born 1975. Schiffer is fluent in three languages, German, English, and French.
Personal life
Schiffer introduced American magician David Copperfield onto stage in 1993, bringing him on stage to perform in a mind reading performance and in his flying illusion, and they became engaged in January 1994. Schiffer appeared on stage with Copperfield sometimes to act as his special guest assistant in illusions, including being levitated, guillotined, and sawn in half. She appeared in David Copperfield's 15 Years of Magic, a 1994 film in which she played a reporter interviewing him, and afterwards, the flying illusion was revived. They announced that they had ended their relationship in September 1999, quoting work schedules.
Copperfield and Schiffer filed a lawsuit in 1997 after the publication claimed that their friendship was a joke. Schiffer "[was] paid for presuming to be Copperfield's fiancée, but [didn't] look like him." In 1999, Schiffer earned an undisclosed sum and a retraction from the Paris Match after a French court found that the magazine's account was inaccurate. The publicist for Copperfield reported that although Schiffer had a deal to appear in the audience at Copperfield's show in Berlin, where they met, she was not under obligation to be his "consort."

Schiffer originally aspired to become a lawyer and used to work in her father's law firm. In October 1987, at age 17, she was scouted in a nightclub in Düsseldorf by Michel Levaton, the head of Metropolitan Model Agency, and was later signed to the agency as a model. After leaving high school, Schiffer flew to Paris for a trial photo shoot, and subsequently appeared on the cover of Elle.
In 1989, she starred in campaigns for Guess?. Guess? co-founder Paul Marciano said in E! Forbes Top 15 Supermodel Beauties Who Made Bank, "Guess? name became really much more known around the world because [of] Claudia". Early on in her career, Schiffer was said to resemble Brigitte Bardot.
