Claribel Alegría Career

Career

Alegra's literary work reflects Central America's popular literary current, "la generacion comprometida" (the committed generation). She made arguments for rights using a language that is often counter-literary, like many other poets of her generation who are skeptical of their societies.

Alegra published several books of poetry, including Casting Off (2003), Sorrow (1999), Umbrales (1996), and La Mujer del Ro (1989). She has also published books and children's tales, as well as testimonies (often in collaboration with her husband, DJ "Bud" Flakoll), including "They Won't Take Me Alive."
