Clarence Wiseman Career

Life and career

On June 19, 1907, Wiseman was born in Moreton's Harbour, Colony of Newfoundland. Since he was the son of Salvation Army officers, he moved from one home to another as his parents' messages were deemed "sensible."

Clarence, a cadet at The Salvation Army Training College in Toronto, was promoted to officer on July 4, 1927, in lieu of lieutenant. Bedford Park Corps was his first assignment (Toronto). He was posted to Yorkville Corps, Toronto, six months later, and was serving as an assistant to the commanding officer.

Captain Wiseman was married to Captain Janet Kelly on January 29, 1932. He was then on the editorial staff at the territorial headquarters (THQ), but shortly after they were married, Captain and Mrs Wiseman were sent to London South Corps and continued to serve in corps positions until mid 1940.

Captain Wiseman was then seconded to the Canadian Forces and appointed as chaplain to the 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Engineers, defeating the 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Engineers. At the time, the battalion was involved in preparation exercises just north of Toronto, but the troops were soon sent to Great Britain. For five years, Clarence and Janet Wiseman were based in Clarence, Ireland. Clarence Wiseman, the chaplain, was ordered to resign from his military service and assume responsibility for the Salvation Army's Canadian War Services, with headquarters in Cockspur Street just off Trafalgar Square.

Clarence Wiseman returned to Canada and spent more than eight years as the Army's chiefs in Newfoundland.

At the start of 1954, the Wisemans returned to Toronto, where now Colonel Wiseman was named field secretary for the Canada and Bermuda territories. He was appointed chief secretary and second in command of The Salvation Army's forces in Canada and Bermuda three years ago.

Clarence and Janet Wiseman's first overseas visit occurred in 1960. They traveled to Kenya, where Clarence Wiseman served as the East Africa Territory's territorial commander, earning the rank of lieutenant-commissioner. The Wisemans left England two years ago, when Commissioner Wiseman was named principal of the William Booth Memorial Training College, a position he held for five years.

In 1967, Canada commemorated its centennial, and Clarence Wiseman was appointed territorial governor of the Canada and Bermuda territories, the first Canadian to hold the position.

Commissioner Wiseman was nominated by the eighth High Council in 1974 as a candidate for the office of General, the second time he had been nominated. He was duly elected to serve as the tenth general of The Salvation Army, taking command on July 6, 1974. General Wiseman's return to the office at the age of 67 was only to have three years as the world leader, as the retirement age was then 70. However, during his time in office, he travelled the world extensively, and army service in Guatemala was launched for the first time in Guatemala.
