Christopher Kimball (born June 5, 1951) is an American chef, editor, and television presenter.

Early life and education

Kimball was born and raised in Westchester County, New York, the son of Mary Alice White and Edward Norris Kimball. In southwestern Vermont, the family owned a cabin.

He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and then Columbia University (1973) with a degree in Primitive Art.

Personal life

He has been married three times. Adrienne, his second wife, had a son and three daughters. In December 2012, the two were divorced.

Kimball married Melissa Lee Baldino, executive producer of the America's Test Kitchen television show, on June 30, 2013. She is now co-founder of Christopher Kimball's Milk Street. Oliver Kimball, their son, was born on May 4, 2017. In 2019, Rike, a daughter, was born.

Career

Kimball worked with his stepbrother in a publishing company after graduating from Columbia. He began working for The Center for Direct Marketing in Westport, Connecticut, shortly after, and began taking cooking classes. He founded Cook's Magazine in 1980 after receiving $100,000 in angel investments from colleagues and families. In 1989, he sold the magazine to the Bonnier Company.

Kimball was a co-founder, editor and publisher of America's Test Kitchen, which produces television and radio shows, as well as print magazines, including Cook's Illustrated, which Kimball founded in 1993. Cook's Country magazine, which was released in 2004, was also published. The company's earnings come from its customers rather than advertisers, which distinguishes them from the competitors.

Two Pigs Farm is the cookbook publisher division. Kimball, Eliot Wadsworth II, and George P. Denny III, who formed a private alliance with Kimball, Eliot Wadsworth II, and George P. Denny III, were the sponsors of Kimball's publishing business. Kimball also appeared on America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country from America's Test Kitchen.

Kimball's resignation was announced on November 16, 2015 by Boston Common Press, the parent company of Cooks Country/Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen. Kimball appeared as host on the 2016 TV shows, but his direct involvement in the company ended immediately.

Kimball created Christopher Kimball's Milk Street in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2016. Kimball, according to Suffolk Superior Court, "literally and conceptually ripped off" his former employer, Boston Common Press (the parent company of America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Illustrated), pled guilty. Kimball started his new venture while still on their payroll, according to Boston Common Press, who used corporate assets in the form of recipes and databases to help make Milk Street Kitchen become a direct competitor. In August 2019, the case was settled. Kimball redeemed his remaining stock back to the company as part of the deal.

His ex-wife Adrienne, who said his departure from Cook's Illustrated devalued the company and affected her paychecks, was a further defendant.

He is the author of The Cook's Bible, The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook, Dear Charlie, The Dessert Bible, and Fannie's Last Supper, and is a columnist for the New York Daily News and the Boston-based Tab Communications.

He has been a regular contributor to National Public Radio. Kimball started hosting WGBH-FM's America's Test Kitchen Radio, which was distributed by PRX on January 8, 2011. When he left the America's Test Kitchen TV shows in 2015, he also ended his relationship with the radio show. In 2016, Milk Street Radio, also heard on WGBH-FM in Boston, airing Sundays at 3 p.m., was syndicated to other US public radio stations.
