Christoph "Doom" Schneider (born 11 May 1966) is a German singer.
He is the drummer of the German Neue Deutsche Härte band Rammstein.
Early life
Christoph Schneider was born in Pankow, East Berlin, East Germany. He has one sister who is two years older than him.
Schneider left the extended secondary school at age 16 and went to work as a telecommunications assistant. He served his national service with the East German Army in 1984; he is the only Rammstein service member to have served in the military.
Personal life
The word "Doom" derives from the same video game. Schneider needed a name for the German copyright company, but there were already many Christoph Schneiders. Since they liked the game, Paul Landers suggested the term "Doom." Schneider has stated that if he knew that name would be on every record he played on, he may have chosen a new one.
He has been married twice, most recently to Regina Gizatulina. The two were married in 2005, but since 2009, they have been divorced. Ulrike Schmid, his second wife, married him in 2014. Schneider and Schmid have three children.
Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC are among his favorite rock bands. Ian Paice, Phil Rudd, Vinnie Paul, and Chad Smith are his main drumming influences, according to him.
Career
Schneider's parents wanted him to learn a piano, so they sent him to a special music academy connected to a Pioneers' orchestra, where he was given the option between trumpet, clarinet, and trombone, out of which he preferred trumpet first because it was the easiest to play. He claims to be a natural singer, and after a year of playing the trumpet, he joined the orchestra and appeared at concerts. He was captivated by the kit and was still looking over his shoulder at the drumset while playing. He told his parents that he wanted to learn to play the drums but that they were unable because "they were both from the classical world." He'll go home and play with sticks, while building his own drum set from tin cans and buckets. He bought his first drumkit at age 14, but his parents had to accept it and allow him to rehearse and take lessons.
Schneider left his telecommunication career in 1985 to pursue his musical aspirations by studying music at university, but he was refused admission twice because he lacked no other musical abilities, such as playing the piano. He continued to learn to play himself. Schneider attempted to get into bands as a drummer from 1985 to 1990, with Die Firma being a hit.
In 1994, he joined Richard Kruspe and Oliver Riedel in forming an early version of Rammstein. They entered the Berlin Senate Metrobeat competition after Till Lindemann joined the band, winning the opportunity to record a professional demo with four tracks. Feeling B, a previous Schneider's band, welcomed two other Rammstein, Paul Landers, and keyboardist Christian Lorenz.
