Christian Michael Slater (born August 18, 1969) is an American actor, singer, and producer.

He made his film debut in The Legend of Billie Jean (1985) and gained renown for his role as Jason "J.D." Dean, a sociopathical high school student, in the satire Heathers (1988).

Mr. Corey has been lauded for his role as Mr. Reilly in the USA Network television series Mr. Robot (2015–present), for which he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, Miniseries, or Television Film in 2016, received additional nominations in 2017 and 2018. Slater made his first television appearance on ABC soap opera One Life to Live in New York City, marrying a theatre family.

He attended the Dalton School, the Professional Children's School, and the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

Slater appeared in many big-budget films, including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), Broken Arrow (1996), and Hard Rain (1998), as well as cult films like Pump Up the Volume (1990) and True Romance (1993).

Early life

Slater was born in New York City on August 18, 1969, the son of Michael Hawkins (born Thomas Knight Slater), an actor also known as Michael Gainsborough; and Mary Jo Slater (née Lawton), an acting agent and producer. Ryan Slater, who also became a comedian, has a maternal half-brother. Bill Slater, a radio presenter, was his great-uncle. He attended the Dalton School, the Professional Children's School, and the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

Personal life

Slater married Ryan Haddon, the niece of model Dayle Haddon's daughter. Jaden Christopher (born 1999) and Eliana Sophia (born 2001) have two children. Haddon was jailed in 2003 after an altercation at a Hard Rock Cafe while on vacation in Las Vegas. Haddon was allegedly thrown a glass and cut Slater's neck, requiring 20 stitches. Haddon was charged with domestic battery, booked at Las Vegas' Clark County Detention Center, and released after posting bond. In 2004, they announced their separation over Christmas. Slater was living in London at the time and appeared in a stage version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In 2005, the couple officially separated and divorced in 2007.

After three years of dating, Slater married Brittany Lopez in Florida on December 2, 2013. Lena's daughter was born on August 16, 2019.

Slater competes in Kempo Karate and divides his time between Coconut Grove in Miami, Florida, and Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan.

Slater suffered with drug use in his career throughout his life and was later diagnosed with depression. "Work is my passion, staying sober is my passion," he said at one point. In 2009, he said, "Work is my passion" and having adventures with my children after living in recovery. My children are all-important.

Slater was arrested in 1989 for inebriated driving. He was sentenced to ten days in prison. He was arrested in 1994 when he attempted to board a commercial plane with a pistol in his luggage. He was sentenced to three days of community service. Slater was found guilty of punching Michelle Jonas and attacking a police officer while under the influence of heroin, cocaine, and alcohol in 1997. He had been eating them for two days in a row and had no appetite for sleep. While on parole, he was treated for more than a month in prison and then moved to a three-month term in jail followed by three months in a residential rehabilitation facility. He was released from jail after 59 days on good conduct. Slater was arrested in Manhattan on May 24, 2005, for allegedly groping a woman on the street. Slater was charged with third-degree sexual assault. The charges were later dismissed due to a lack of evidence and the condition that Slater keep out of jail for six months.

Slater has been a sponsor of many charities, including 21st Century Leaders, Global Green, and Whatever It Takes. Slater appeared in an educational video on behalf of Nelson Mandela's 46664 charity for AIDS research. He has also worked in South Africa to promote humanitarian work. Slater visited Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the United States in early May 2009. Slater traveled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he worked on the television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. On March 21, 2010, the episode premiered.

Career

Slater began acting at an early age. On the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, his first television appearance was at the age of 8. After a run on Ryan's Hope, he made his Broadway debut as the lisping Winthrop Paroo opposite Dick Van Dyke in the 1980 revival of The Music Man. Copperfield, Merlin, Macbeth, Side Man, and The Glass Menagerie are among the additional Broadway credits. In addition,, he appeared in London's West End in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Swimming With Sharks.

Slater made his big screen debut in 1985's The Legend of Billie Jean, portraying Billie Jean's brother Binx. Despite being expected to be a big hit, the film came up short at the box office. It has acquired a following. With his role in The Name of the Rose (1986) alongside Sean Connery, his career improved. When they looked at a string of murders at a Benedictine abbey, Slater played Connery's apprentice monk. The film was a commercial success, grossing US$390 million worldwide, and Slater made a name for himself in the 1990s. Slater accepted a cameo role in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, immediately after playing Charlie Luciano in the crime drama Mobsters, despite being a huge Star Trek fan. He developed his film career in the following year and appeared in the comedy Kuffs opposite Milla Jovovich. Slater developed his acting skills in 1993, appearing in Untamed Heart and playing Clarence Worley in Quentin Tarantino's True Romance, which attracted many rave reviews. He appeared in Interview with the Vampire (1994), after the death of his companion River Phoenix, who had been never cast. Slater then gave his money from the film to Phoenix's favorite charities. In the big-budget John Woo film Broken Arrow (1996), which also starred John Travolta, Lewis played him in the romance film Bed of Roses in 1996 opposite Mary Stuart Masterson and Riley Hale. Slater appeared in the crime film Hard Rain in 1998 alongside Morgan Freeman. He appeared in the dark comedy Very Bad Things opposite Cameron Diaz last year.

Slater has worked on television shows with leading roles in mainly lower budget films, as well as supporting roles in a handful of mainstream productions.
