In 2007, he became the frontman for the SteelDrivers, a bluegrass band. They had two hit records before Stapleton left in 2010; each had their top ranking on the bluegrass chart before being ranked number two on the bluegrass chart.

They toured regionally until 2013, and Zac Brown Band opened their Zac Brown Band at one time. In November 2010, the band released a self-titled album.

In 2013, Stapleton joined Mercury Nashville, a Universal Music Group Nashville affiliate, as a solo artist. "What Are You Listening To?" is his first single. "I was released in October 2013, but it didn't do as well as expected." The single was part of a collection that was never released but later revealed. To the WSM-AM show, "All Nighter Comin'," Stapleton created the theme, "All Nighter Comin," Marcia Campbell, an American radio show with a large trucker following. Vince Gill and Al Anderson co-wrote the album, with Gill on vocals. Stapleton emphasized the importance of the band's formation and promotion of the album, saying that the acoustic guitar's participation in the recording process was crucial to the record's success.

Stapleton claimed he created the title track, "Traveller," while driving through New Mexico on their way back to Nashville in a 1979 Jeep that she bought for him after his father died in 2013, which the family had flown to Phoenix, Arizona, to take possession of.
