Chris Slater Career

Playing career

Slater was released from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2005, but he didn't have a first-team appearance to his name. Oldham Athletic and Chasetown's Cup participation was just the start of Slater's and Chasetown's cup adventures in November 2005. "Chase" was assisting with their replay at Boundary Park in the first round of the FA Cup in November 2005. He had won a trial with Tranmere Rovers by April 2006 and was also being scrutinized by Blackpool and Crewe Alexandra, both English Football League clubs. At the end of the 2005–06 season, he helped Chasetown win the Midland Football Alliance title. He was at The Scholar Ground for the first season of the new Southern League Division One Midlands tier, 2006–07. He came to fame as a fan of Chasetown's 1–0 FA Cup win over League One Port Vale in December 2007. In doing so, he helped Chasetown become the lowest ranked team to advance to the Third Round (proper) of the FA Cup. Vale was the eighth club Chasetown had defeated in their campaign this season. He had played 146 league games for the "Scholars" during his three years with the club, scoring one goal.

He was signed by Lee Sinnott's Port Vale, along with Chasetown teammate Kyle Perry, in January 2008 for a small fee and quit his day job as a block paver. In a 2–0 loss to Swansea City on 19 January 2008, he made his League One debut as a 70th minute substitute. He appeared in four more league games this season, none of which were canceled as the Vale were relegated to League Two. Slater was suspended from his service in six league and two cup games for the "Valuants" in 2008-09, and then re-joined Chasetown.

Slater was a key member of the Chasetown team during the 2008–09 season, but the team lost 1–0 to Nuneaton Town. In 2009-2010, he appeared in 35 league games, with the club winning promotion from the Northern Premier League Division One South via the play-offs. He remained with the club from 2010-2011, when the club reached the seventh level of the English football league pyramid for the first time in history. However, the "Scholars" were unable to maintain such high a high rate and were relegated in 2011-12. They reached the Division One South play-off final in 2012–13, where they were defeated 2–1 by Stamford. In 2013–14 and 13th, the club finished 12th, while Slater reached 500 appearances for the club in April 2015. He left the club at the end of the 2016–17 season after crashing the club's all-time appearance record.

After being signed by Gary Birch in June 2017, Slater joined Walsall Wood in Midland League. He was instrumental in the success of the "Prims" at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Slater returned to Chasetown as a player-coach for the 2020–21 season. In the 2021-2022-2022 season, he made five appearances in cup competitions.
