Christopher Sarandon Jr. (born July 24, 1942) is an American actor and voice actor.

He is best known for his role in The Princess Bride, the vampire Jerry Dandrige in Fright Night, Detective Mike Norris in Child's Play (1988), and for giving the speaking voice to Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Leon Shermer's role in Dog Day Afternoon was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Early life

Chris Sarandon was born and raised in Beckley, West Virginia, as the son of restaurateurs Chris and Cliffie (née Cardullias) Sarandon. His father, who was originally named "Sarondonedes," was born in Istanbul, Turkey, of Greek origins; his mother, who is also of Greek descent.

Sarandon graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. He earned a degree in speech at West Virginia University. In Washington, D.C., he earned his master's degree in theater from The Catholic University of America (CUA).

Personal life

Sarandon has married three times: in 1967, he married actress Susan Sarandon. The two met in Washington, D.C., while attending The Catholic University of America together. The couple married for a year; in 1979, the couple separated; the pair divorced. After Susan's divorcing, he married Lisa Ann Cooper, a fashion model, in 1980. Stephanie (born 1982), Alexis (born 1984) and Michael (born 1988) were married with two daughters and one son. The marriage ended in divorce in 1989 after nine years. In 1994, he married Joanna Gleason, a former actress and singer. The two met briefly in Broadway's short-lived 1991 musical Nick & Nora; the two returned to the stage together in 1998's Thorn and Bloom. They've also worked together in several films, including Road Ends, Edie & Pen, Let the Devil Wear Black, and American Perpetual.

Career

He performed with numerous improvisational companies and became heavily involved with regional theatre after graduation, making his debut in the play The Rose Tattoo in 1965. Sarandon moved to New York City in 1968, where he appeared as Dr. Tom Halverson on the television show The Guiding Light (1973–1974). He appeared in the primetime television series The Satan Murders (1974) and Game on Thursday before being nominated for Best New Male Actor of the Year and the Golden Globes and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Sarandon appeared in the Broadway play The Rothschilds and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, as well as performing at numerous Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw festivals in the United States and Canada. He had a number of television appearances, some of which (such as A Tale of Two Cities in 1980) related to his affinity for the classics. He appeared in the thriller film Lipstick (1976) and as a demon in the film The Sentinel (1977).

Sarandon continued to appear in many roles in the years to come, including the title role of Christ in the made-for-television film The Day Christ Died (1980). He received accolades for his role as Sydney Carton in a TV-movie version of A Tale of Two Cities (1980), co-starred Dennis Hopper in the 1983 film The Osterman Weekend, which was based on the Robert Ludlum novel of the same name, and co-starred Goldie Hawn in the film Protocol (1984). In the horror film Fright Night (1985), there was another mainstream success as the vampire-next-door. He appeared in the 1986 television film Liberty, which was about the construction of New York City's Statue of Liberty.

Prince Humperdinck of Rob Reiner's 1987 film The Princess Bride is one of his most memorable roles, although he has also appeared in several other popular films, including his lead roles in the original horror film Child's Play (1988). In 1992, Joseph Curwen/Charles Dexter Ward appeared in The Resurrected. Jack Skellington, the main character of Tim Burton's animated Disney movie The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), has since reprised his role in other films, including the Disney/Square video games Kingdom Hearts II and the Capcom sequel to Oogie's Revenge. Sarandon reprised his role as Jack Skellington for several Disneyland Halloween events and attractions, including Halloween Screams, the Frightfully Fun Parade, and the Haunted Mansion Holiday, a three-month extension of the Haunted Mansion, in which Jack and his allies take over a mansion in the attempt to introduce Christmas, as his character did in the film.

Sarandon appeared on television for the second time as Dr. Burke in NBC's long-running medical drama ER.

In 1991, he appeared on Broadway in Nick & Nora (based on the film The Thin Man) with Joanna Gleason, Monty Hall's daughter. Sarandon married Gleason in 1994. They've appeared together in a number of films, including Edie & Pen (1996), American Perfekt (1997), and Let the Devil Wear Black (1999). He appeared in several television series, including as the Necromancer demon Armand in Charmed, and as superior court judge Barry Krumble for six episodes of Judging Amy during the 2000s.

In the six-time Tony award-winning Broadway musical drama The Light in the Piazza at Lincoln Center, he appeared as Signor Naccarelli in 2006. Antoine de Guiche, Jennifer Garner, and Daniel Sunjata were among the few people to appear in Cyrano de Bergerac recently.
