Frederick Christopher Klein (born March 14, 1979) is an American actor best known for his role in the American Pie comedies, as well as the serial killer Cicada on The Flash.

Early life

Klein was born in Brookfield, Illinois. He is of German, Irish, and English descent. Terese (née Bergen), his mother, is a kindergartener, and Fred Klein, his father, is an engineer. Klein was the second of three children. Debbie's older sister, Debbie, was born in 1978, and Timothy, his younger brother, was born in 1982. Klein first experienced stage by singing This Little Light of Mine in a community theater at Sheraton Convention Center in Chicago as a youth. He was in the town for thirteen years before his family moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Klein participated in his high school's success of West Side Story, played centerback and linebacker for the football team, and swam on the Millard West Swim Team. Klein was offered his first professional acting position by director Alexander Payne, who was scouting Omaha, his hometown, as a potential filming location for the film Election. He attended Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, Texas.

Personal life

Klein and actress Katie Holmes began dating in January 2000. Around Christmas of 2003, the two became engaged. In March 2005, the couple called off the engagement and ended their relationship.

In 2011, Klein met Laina Rose Thyfault, a travel agent, at a mutual friend's wedding. After three years of dating and married eight months later in Montana on August 9, 2015, the two got engaged in December 2014. Klein revealed in a tweet that he and his wife were expecting their first child together in March 2016. Frederick Easton, the couple's son, was born on July 23, 2016. Isla Rose, the couple's daughter who was born May 26, 2018.

Klein was arrested in San Diego County on February 5, 2005, and then in Los Angeles on June 16, 2010. Klein had checked into the Cirque Lodge to begin a 30-day alcohol withdrawal program on June 21, 2010. "Christ was compelled to take a concrete look at a problem he had been struggling with for years," Klein's publicist explained. He now knows that he will not be able to beat this drug alone."

Payne selected Klein for filming after deciding on an election. The film was released in April 1999 to rave reviews. Klein found steady work in film shortly after attending TCU, where he studied theater and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was next seen in American Pie, as Christopher Russell Ostreicher, which opened on July 9, 1999, and was a box office hit. Klein appeared in Here on Earth with LeeLee Sobieski and Josh Hartnett (2000) in the following years. Klein recalled his appearance in American Pie 2 (2001) and American Reunion (2012), but reportedly, he was unable to attend the American Wedding due to scheduling conflicts. Klein appeared in Mel Gibson's Vietnam War film We Were Soldiers in 2002. Klein starred in the 2002 remake of Rollerball, but it was a huge critical and financial loss. Klein has appeared in several teen films, including Just Friends (2004) and American Dreamz (2006).

Klein was cast as an American pilot in the Damien Lay film The Uberkanone in 2014. He co-starred in Authors Anonymous, a 2014 comedy indie film starring Kaley Cuoco. Klein was introduced as Cicada, the primary villain of the fifth season of the superhero television series The Flash, in 2018.
