Chris Gethard Career

Career

Gethard is an improvisational actor who appears in major portions of Manhattan's Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. When he was a student at Rutgers University in 2000, he started taking classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

Gethard was asked to write a pilot based on his book A Bad Idea I'm About to Do in 2013. Gethard was given a year by the IFC, in addition to writing their pilot, to market for them at festivals and produce web pages.

Gethard performed his show Career Suicide in August 2016, which was his first appearance in Edinburgh's Festival Fringe, focusing on his experiences with depression, suicide attempts, and alcoholism. He also filmed an episode of Stuart Goldsmith's "Comedian's Comedian Podcast" during his stay at the festival in December 2016.

Career Suicide, an evening of stand-up comedy based on Gethard's off-Broadway display of the same name, was broadcast on HBO on May 6, 2017. The HBO special, directed by Judd Apatow, has received acclaim from The New York Times, Time, NPR, The A.V. Today's Club, Entertainment Weekly, The Daily Beast, Paste, The Huffington Post, and Splitsider are all sources.

He appeared in a 30-minute YouTube video called Laughing Matters, produced by SoulPancake in collaboration with Funny or Die, wherein a number of comedians discuss mental health.

On Gethard's website, he hosted The Chris Gethard Show, a talk show that first aired on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network and was streamed around the world. In 2009, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater started as a live piece. Gethard went to Los Angeles to pitch a network version of the show but then returned to New York City to make it public-access because he wanted to keep the show's chaotic, cheap feel from early MTV talk shows. Both stage and film performances have since been included in the show. It has a reputation for outrageous spectacle, including scenes where a comedian hires a kickboxer to harass someone if he refused to answer simple questions about his relatives. As a child, Gethard adored comedians who seemed to be able to do what they wanted, such as Howard Stern, Andy Kaufman, and David Letterman. This passion influenced The Chris Gethard Exhibition's style and laid the groundwork for Gethard's comedic persona.

The show was completely self-financed, and no of the performers were compensated for their time during its public access hours. However, this largely emerged as a result of the appearance of Upright Citizens Brigade shows and the show's aesthetic, Gethard had stated that he would not object to the show being picked up by a television network. He worked with a number of network designers, but the show was not picked up due to its unpredictable nature and regular swearing. Comedian or Die co-produced a pilot from TCGS in early 2014, resulting in a short absence from the weekly show. The pilot was taped but Comedy Central was not able to pick up the pilot. The show has migrated from May to January 2015, and it has been rerunned on MNN. It was revealed in the show's last MNN episode that it had been picked up by Fusion, where it lasted for two seasons.

Several celebrities have appeared at the show's various appearances, including P. Diddy, Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell, Paul Giamatti, and Lena Dunham.

The Chris Gethard Show was picked up by truTV for its third season and premiered live episodes in August 2017. Gethard announced in August that the show had been cancelled and would not return for another season.

Gethard hosts the Earwolf podcast Beautiful/Anonymous, which premiered on March 15, 2016. The following is Earwolf's account of the show: "One phone call." 1 hour is allotted. No names have been given. No holds were allowed. Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People, hosted by comedian Chris Gethard, is based on a premise that includes one anonymous caller every week. He can't hang up first, no matter what. Anything can and will happen, from shocking confessions and family stories to philosophical debates and shameless self-promotion. In 2017, he received the Webby Award for Best Host.

Gary Richardson co-hosted Earwolf's podcast, In Your Dreams. The podcast first aired on December 12, 2016, with special guest comedian Aparna Nancherla, and the ninth and final episode aired on February 6, 2017.

Since May 3, 2020, Gethard has hosted Planet Scum Live, the show's name was given to his live streaming comedy network.

Gethard is also the author of Weird NY, a book that explores the ghost stories and urban legends of New York City, as well as A Bad Idea I'm About to Do, a collection of tales from Gethard's life that has been featured on This American Life. Gethard served as an editorial assistant for the well-known Weird NJ and Weird US newspapers. Gethard's self-help book Lose Well was published out of Harper Collins' HarperOne imprint on October 16, 2018.

The Chris Gethard Show is well-known for its audience interaction. A woman called in to inquire into the show's purpose was on display at one of its performances. Gethard invited her to join them, and she became a regular for four months. Random, unknown followers' conversions into regular cast members became common after this. The show remained a trend through its public access run, with a new "random" cast member appearing on 15 episodes.
