Chetan Pratap Singh Chauhan (born 21 July 1947) is a retired cricketer who has played 40 Test matches for India.
He competed in the Ranji Trophy for Maharashtra and Delhi.
He played the majority of his international cricket in the 1970s and was Sunil Gavaskar's regular opening partner during this period. Chetan Chauhan was elected Chairman of NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) from June 2016 to June 2017.
In 1991 and 1998, he was also elected twice from Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, to the Lok Sabha.
He is minister for youth and sports in Uttar Pradesh, India, as of August 2018.
Early days
Chauhan was born in Uttar Pradesh in a Hindu Rajput family. In 1960, he migrated to Pune, Maharashtra, where his father, an army officer, was transferred. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Wadia College in Pune. He was coached by former Maharashtra player Kamal Bhandarkar. Chauhan served in the Rohinton Baria Trophy from 1966–67 and was selected to represent the West Zone in the interzonal Vizz Trophy in the same year. In the final, he scored 103 against North Zone and 88 & 63 against South Zone. Sunil Gavaskar, his opening partner in the second innings, was his partner.
He was selected in the Maharashtra Ranji team after more success in the Vizzy trophy in 1967. Chauhan's first century came next year as he was first in and last out against Bombay on a rain-ravaged wicket where the first six wickets fell for 52 runs. In the Duleep Trophy final against five Test bowlers, he scored 103 against South Zone, and he was selected to play for India in 1969–70.
Career in politics
Chauhan was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He served in Amroha (1991-1998) and 1998 as a member of the Lok Sabha (lower house of the parliament). In 1996, 1999, and 2004, he lost the elections from the same constituency, finishing third on the last attempt. He then made his comeback to politics by defeating Alley Hasan of Bahujan Samaj in 1998 General Elections by more than 35,000 votes. He was elected to Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha from Naugawan Sadat (Assembly constituency) in 2017 and appointed a minister in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's government.
