Cheong Choong Kong (born 9 June 1941) is the Malaysian former Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Airlines.
After the crash of Singapore Airlines Flight 006 during take-off, he appeared as the airline's public face.
He is currently chairman of the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation and appeared on MediaCorp TV's television sitcom San Poh as San Poh.
Education
Cheong obtained a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Mathematics from the University of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after completing his studies at the Methodist Boys' School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He stayed in Australia as a Colombo Plan scholar.
He earned a Master of Science (1966) and a Ph.D. (1968) in Mathematics from Australian National University. Random processes and related fields of applied and theoretical probability were his primary research areas.
Career
He began his career as a mathematics lecturer at the University of Malaya (1968), before becoming associate professor and then head of the department.
In 1974, he moved from academia to Singapore Airlines. He spent 29 years with Singapore Airlines before becoming the company's CEO.
Fortune named him Asian Businessman of the Year in 1998, citing that SIA had a "unbroken 27-year track of success during difficult economic times."
He was first elected to the board of OCBC on July 1, 1999. He served as Vice Chairman from 26 March 2002 to June 2003. He was elected chairman of the board on July 1, 2003.
He is now the Chairman of several businesses, including Singapore Press Holdings Ltd, Great Eastern Holdings Ltd, Great Eastern Life Assurance Company Ltd, and Overseas Assurance Corporation Ltd.
Kong resigned as chairman of the OCBC Bank veterans board of directors on August 31, 2014.
