Calogero "Chazz" Palminteri (born May 15, 1952) is an American actor, screenwriter, producer, and playwright.
He is best known for his appearance in Bullets Over Broadway, the 1993 film A Bronx Tale based on his play of the same name, Special Agent Dave Kujan, Primo Sidone, and his recurring role as Shorty in Modern Families, which is based on his name.
Early life
Calogero Palminteri was born in 1951, the son of Rose, a homemaker, and Lorenzo Palminteri, a bus driver, and Lorenzo Palminteri, a bus driver. He was born in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx. Palminteri is of Sicilian origins; his grandparents, Calogero Palminteri and Rosa Bonfante, married in 1908 and immigrated from Menfi, Sicily, in 1910. Palminteri witnessed the murder of a mobster in front of his apartment building at the age of nine; the police questioned him, but he denied knowing the incident.
He struggled to become an actor, dividing his time between acting in off-Broadway plays and moonlighting as a bouncer alongside Dolph Lundgren.
Personal life
Palminteri lives in Bedford, Westchester County, New York. He describes himself as a "very spiritual" devout Roman Catholic. He married Gianna Ranaudo in 1992 and they have two children together.
Career
Palminteri appeared on Broadway in A Bronx Tale, the autobiographical one-man performance based on his childhood that appeared at Theatre West in Los Angeles in 1989. Palminteri states he began writing the play after being suspended from a club as a doorman. Swifty Lazar refused to allow him into the house. The Broadway production, directed by Jerry Zaks and with music by John Gromada, opened on October 4, 1988 at the Walter Kerr Theatre and opened on October 25, 1988, and was on display for 18 weeks. Palminteri appears in A Bronx Tale, which depicts a rough childhood on the Bronx streets. In 1989, the playhouse 91 production ran for two months.
In D'Aquila's play, Unorganized Crime, Palminteri appeared opposite Kenny D'Aquila. Palminteri loved Robert De Niro's picture and, in turn, he accepted a role in D'Aquila's mafia-themed drama.

In 1990, Robert De Niro saw Palminteri's Broadway performance of A Bronx Tale, and the two actors collaborated together to make the play into a film. The film was a commercial and critical hit. In 1994, Chazz Palminteri played Cheech, a gangster in Bullets Over Broadway, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

He appeared in many advertisements for Vanilla Coke during its tenure, portraying a mob boss who would threaten celebrities if they did not praise the product's taste, and then encouraged them to "reward their curiosity."
