Charlie Sutton (3 April 1924 – June 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who represented Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Despite being a coach and committeeman for many years, the Bulldogs are perhaps best known for captaining the Bulldogs to their first VFL premiership in 1954. Recruited from Spotswood, Sutton, was a tenacious, nuggety footballer who embodied the club's fighting spirit.
He played as a rover and half forward, but he made his name as a back pocket player.
He came in third place in the Brownlow Medal count in 1950 and was named as the Bulldogs' best and fairest player of the season by the time. Sutton coached Footscray from 1956 to 1957, when he was mysteriously dismissed and replaced by Ted Whitten after his retirement as a player.
In 1967 (replacing Ted Whitten) and 1968 (after which he resigned because the ever-increasing demands of coaching conflicted far too much with his company of running a hotel in Yarraville). When Dick Collinson resigned, Sutton took over the Footscray Football Club's President, the Charles Sutton Medal, which has been named in his honour. In 1996, Sutton was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Sutton died in 2012 at the age of 88.
