Early life
McDowell was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 10, 1983, to English actor Malcolm McDowell and American actress Mary Steenburgen. Lilly, his older sister (born January 22, 1981), and three younger half-brothers from his father's marriage to Kelley Kuhr. Ted Danson, McDowell's stepfather, married Steenburgen in 1995. McDowell has had a running joke at Steenburgen's expense since 2014, claiming on several occasions that his mother is actually actress Andie MacDowell.
Personal life
Emilia Clarke dated McDowell from 2018 to 2019. Charlie began a relationship with actress Lily Collins, the granddaughter of English drummer and singer Phil Collins, in 2019. They revealed their marriage in September 2020. They were married in Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado, on September 4, 2021.
Career

Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss' debut film, The One I Love, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014, where it was later acquired by RADiUS-TWC and released in August 2014. Sarah Silverman's untitled HBO series pilot was directed by McDowell in 2015. The project was not discovered by the network and was not visible. Rooney Mara, Jason Segel, and Robert Redford appeared in McDowell's upcoming film The Discovery. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was purchased by Netflix in 2017 for a global release.
In March 2017, filmmaker McDowell announced that he was adapting author Don DeLillo's book Zero K as a limited series for FX, with Noah Hawley and Scott Rudin producing. McDowell directed an episode of Hawley's television series Legion, which also appeared on FX.
McDowell produced the first and last episodes of Showtime's On Becoming a God in Central Florida in 2019 and also served as an executive producer. He has also produced episodes of Silicon Valley, Dear White People, Tales from the Loop, and Dispatches from Elsewhere.
