He has also won three races in the SCCA Formula Ford series. He moved to Formula Ford US in 2003, finishing third overall with two race wins and seven podium finishes. He also competed in the UK Formula Ford winter series, winning one race and finishing third overall, with one race win.

He competed in full UK Formula Ford championship for Team JLR in 2004, winning two race victories and eleven podiums on his way to fourth place in the championship. He finished eighth in the end-of-season Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. His success earned him a ride in the 2005 British Formula 3 Championship, where he finished second behind teammate lvaro Parente. He also finished 12th in the Marlboro Masters at Zandvoort, but did not finish the season-end Macau Grand Prix.

Kimball stayed in Formula Three in 2006 but moved up to the Formula 3 Euro Series with the French Signature-Plus team. To finish the season in eleventh place, he won one race and three podiums. He competed in the Masters Formula 3 race at Zandvoort and the Macau Grand Prix, finishing in 9th and 21st positions respectively, once more.

In 2007, he competed in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series for the Italian Victory Engineering team, alongside Dutchman Giedo van der Garde. He participated in 12 races (leaving the series with two race weekends remaining) and finished 24th in points, with a best finish of 8th in the Monza and Nurburgring sprint races. He left the team due to the onset of Type 1 diabetes, which required hospitalization. He wears a wireless blood sugar monitor and drinks sugar water on board the car when racing as part of his ongoing therapy. With Prema Powerteam, he returned to F3 EuroSeries for six races in 2008. He appeared in the first round of the A1 Grand Prix series for A1 Team USA late in 2008.

Kimball took to Indy Lights in 2009 for the new Team PBIR outfit. He said that one of the main reasons in his return to the United States is to raise Diabetes awareness in his home country. Kimball finished 10th in points at Watkins Glen International, with a best finish of 4th at the top of the charts.

In 2010 he returned to Indy Lights and signed with AFS Racing/Andretti Autosport. Despite not winning a race or pole, Kimball had four second-place finishes on the season and finished fourth in points, one spot behind teammate Martin Plowman.

Kimball's name was announced on December 16, 2010, and it would continue with the IndyCar Series in 2011, in which he would race the No. ten. Chip Ganassi Racing's entry number 83. Kimball finished 19th in points with a best finish of ninth at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Kimball returned to the team in 2012 and placed 19th in points despite missing a race due to injury. He finished second at the Honda Indy Toronto, his first podium finish in his career. Kimball won his first IndyCar race on August 4, 2013, in Mid-Ohio's Honda Indy 200. He also placed second at Pocono and fourth at Barber, finishing ninth in points. He competed in his first 24 Hours of Daytona with Ganassi in 2013 and was on the race-winning team with co-drivers Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Pruett, and Memo Rojas.

In 2017, he had no top-five finishes, and afterward, he parted with Ganassi.

For the 2018 season, Carlin signed Kimball. He placed fifth in the Toronto top tens and took home six top tens. Kimball came back from retirement in 2019, with two tenth-place finishes. In 2020, he joined A. J. Foyt Enterprises, where he received two top tens in the United States. Kimball failed to qualify for the Indy 500 for the first time in his career in 2021.
