Charles Matthew Hunnam (born 10 April 1980) is an English actor.
He is best known for his role as Jackson "Jax" Teller in the FX drama series Sons of Anarchy (1999–2002), Pete Dunham in The Lost City of Z (2004), Guy Ritchie's Legend of the Sword (2017).
Early life
Robert Matthew Hunnam was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on April 10, 1980, the son of Jane Bell, a ballet dancer and company owner, and William Hunnam. One of his grandmothers was a portrait painter. He has said that his mother "did a really good job" as a single parent. Oliver and Christian, his older brother, and two younger half brothers on his mother's side.
The family moved to Melmerby, Cumbria, at the age of 12, when his mother remarried. He played rugby and sparred with his classmates during his youth, so he was suspended from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Penrith, Cumbria, which required him to study and take exams from home. He decided to study the performing arts at the Cumbria College of Art and Design in Carlisle, rather than going to university. He obtained a dual degree in film theory and film history with a focus on performing arts. He wanted to write and direct his own films.

In 1999, Hunnam met actress Katharine Towne, the daughter of actress Julie Payne and filmmaker Robert Towne, who all auditioned for roles on Dawson's Creek. They married in Las Vegas after dating for three weeks; in 2002, they divorced; Sophie Dahl, actress Stella Parker, and film producer Georgina Townsley were all dated in subsequent years.
Since 2005, he has been in a friendship with artist Morgana McNelis.

Hunnam was discovered on Christmas Eve in a JD Sports branch while playing around with his brother while trying to buy shoes. Byker Grove, a Newcastle-based youth drama, approached Hunnam, and he was later cast as Jason for three episodes of the film. He had a brief modeling career before deciding that modeling wasn't for him. Hunnam's first major role came at age 18 when Russell T Davies played as 15-year-old schoolboy Nathan Maloney in Davies' Channel 4 drama Queer as Folk. He continued this trend by portraying Daz in the film Whatever Happened to Harold Smith? (1999) and then moved to the United States.
