Early life
Heaton was born on 6 February 1994 and raised by his mother on a council estate in Bridlington, a small coastal town in Yorkshire, England.
Personal life
Heaton has a child with Akiko Matsuura, a former bandmate. Since 2016, he has been in a relationship with Stranger Things co-star Natalia Dyer, who plays his character’s girlfriend Nancy Wheeler in the series.
In October 2017, Heaton was detained at LAX Airport in Los Angeles for possession of small amounts of cocaine. He was not charged with a crime and was instead sent back to London. He was later allowed to return to the US to shoot the third season of Stranger Things.
Heaton is a keen football fan and an avid supporter of Arsenal F.C.
Career
Heaton left London at the age of 16. He performed in a variety of bands before joining Comanechi as the drummer. During his time in jail, the band released an album in 2013 and toured for a year and a half. Heaton later joined Half Loon, a London-based experimental band.
Heaton has no formal acting training, first considering an acting career while still working for extras and commercial companies to increase his income as a singer and bartender.
Heaton's 2015 was a pivotal year for the actor; he appeared on a number of British television dramas and was cast in three major projects, including Stranger Things. He appeared in the ITV crime drama series DCI Banks and Vera and then appeared in BBC One's medical drama series Casualty. He appeared in Shut In, co-starring Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt and directed by Farren Blackburn, in his first feature film role. The film was released in early 2015, before being cast in Stranger Things, but after the show's premiere, it was released. In late 2015, he shot As You Are, a coming-of-age film. In January 2016, it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival for the first time.
Jonathan Byers, a director on Netflix's supernatural drama series Stranger Things, was Heaton's breakthrough role. The first season debuted in July 2016 to critical acclaim; the most recent season, it was its fourth, was released in 2022.
Heaton appeared in the psychological horror film Marrowbone in 2017. Heaton was cast as Samuel "Sam" Guthrie / Cannonball in the film The New Mutants, which was based on the Marvel Comics comic book of the same name in May. The film, which was shot in 2017, was released in 2020. Heaton will appear in a new two-part drama in August 2018. A disability charity group chastised the casting, which led to the company's chief that not using a disabled actor was a missed opportunity. In the end, it wasn't created.
He starred opposite Catherine Keener in the independent film No Future in 2021 and was a part of the cast of the critically acclaimed drama The Souvenir Part II.
