Stage career
Gray had left his first job as a clerk for an estate agent to become an actor by his mid-twenties. He began his stage appearance at Bournemouth's Palace Court Hotel, where he was a last-minute cast replacement in The Beaux' Stratagem. Gray wowed everyone, including himself, with the quality of his appearance. In the late 1950s, he migrated away from Bournemouth, but his parents stayed at the family's house until their deaths.
He had to change his name because there was already an actor named Donald Gray when he first started as a professional actor. Charles Gray partially because Charles was the name of his maternal grandfather, partly because he had a close friend named Charles and partly because it sounded appealing. He went under the name Oliver Gray for his first appearance on Broadway in the 1961 musical Keanan.
In the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, London, Charles Gray distinguished himself in dramatic roles, as well as at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon and at the Old Vic. He received his vocal instruction at the RSC and became well-known for his imposing presence.
