Professional career

Jones was regarded as one of the best defensive end prospects for the 2012 NFL Draft.

Jones was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round with the 21st overall pick in the first round. He was the highest select player from Syracuse since defensive end Dwight Freeney in 2002. Jones also signed a four-year deal with the Patriots on May 23, 2012.

Jones was thrown straight into the Patriots' starting right defensive end position as a rookie. Jones stripped quarterback Jake Locker, along with fellow rookie quarterback Dont'a Hightower, from the game and returning it for a touchdown in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Jones sacked Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb a week later, sparking a fumble that was not recovered by the Patriots.

Jones made two sacks of quarterback Russell Wilson and put some good pressure on the Seahawks offensive line in Week 6, prompting one to fumble. In Week 8 against the St. Louis Rams, Jones was sacked for his sixth time in his career, after dropping Sam Bradford to the turf in London, England. Jones had 45 tackles, 6 sacks, 5 passes blocked, and 3 forced fumbles in 14 games (13 starts) of his rookie season in 2012.
