Chan Sung Jung Career

Mixed martial arts career

Jung won a Lightweight Tournament organized by Pancrase Korea in June 2007 and then in December the same year. In 2008, he won both his attempts for Japanese promotion DEEP. He then participated in the 2009 Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix, but he was disqualified from the tournament by eventual champion Masanori Kanehara.

He defeated Michihiro Omigawa at DEEP: Gladiator by unanimous decision on August 16, 2008. His next fight was against Fanjin Son at DEEP: 39 Impact, where he gained by knockout in 17 seconds.

Jung then qualified for the 2009 Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix, meeting Shintaro Ishiwatari in his first-round match against Sengoku 7. Jung struck Ishiwatari with a right hand, causing him to give up his back after dropping Ishiwatari once more. Jung sunk in a back-naked choke submission, causing Ishiwatari to fail at 4:29 of the first round.

He lost in his second-round match at Sengoku 8, 2009, after a unanimous decision to dismiss Masanori Kanehara officially, effectively ending him from the tournament. The decision was regarded skeptical by the English commentators and several supporters (particularly given Sengoku's history of biased decisions against Korean combatants), who believed that Jung had done enough to warrant the call. Jung was announced on June 7, 2009 that it would meet American Matt Jaggers in Sengoku 9 in a reserve bout for the tournament, with the winner stepping in as a replacement if any of the remaining fighters are unable to continue. Jung won the second round by a triangle choke submission, but he wasn't required to step in as a replacement.

Chan Sung Jung has since joined World Extreme Cagefighting. Leonard Garcia (who replaced injured opponent Cub Swanson) on April 24, 2010 at WEC 48 losing by a split decision in an extremely difficult split decision. Many MMA journals and followers, including many in the Sacramento home crowd, strongly opposed the decision, which has prompted further concerns about the validity of the fight judging. However, the bout was named the Fight of the Night by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, but the bout was not announced as the Year of the Year.

On September 30, 2010, Jung next met George Roop at WEC 51. In the second round, he lost due to a head kick.

On January 22, 2011, Jung was supposed to face Rani Yahya at UFC Fight Night 23. Jung, on the other hand, was forced from the card due to a serious injury.

After Jung stepped in to replace an injured Nam Phan, a match was scheduled against Garcia on March 26, 2011. In the final second round of the second round, Jung was able to avenge the original loss after submitting Garcia with a twister. This was the first time a twister submission by a competitor in the UFC's history, and Jung's win gave him his first Submission of the Night award. The World MMA Awards announced it later this year for the Submission of the Year. Jung said in his post-fight interview that he learned the move by watching Eddie Bravo videos on YouTube.

Former title holder Mark Hominick was defeated in UFC 140 on December 10, 2011. Jung defeated the bout by KO at seven seconds of the first round, the fastest knockout at the time. Jung's victory over Mark Hominick earned him Knockout of the Night Awards. Jung was also lauded in his homeland South Korea for his role in national television broadcasting (such as KBS).

On May 15, 2012, Jung met Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fuel TV: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier. In the fourth round, Jung defeated Poirier by submission. Jung Submission of the Night and both participants' Fight of the Night awards were given for their efforts. Multiple publications at the end of 2012 named the bout as Fight of the Year and Submission of the Year. This was the first time Jung stepped out of the extremely popular and appropriately named song, Zombie by the Cranberries. He will use it for every fight afterward.

On July 6, 2013, Jung was supposed to face Ricardo Lamas at UFC 162. Jung had been suspended from the Lamas match on June 14, but the Lamas squad would face José Aldo in the UFC Featherweight Championship on August 3, 2013. After Jung suffered a dislocated shoulder while throwing an overhand right, Aldo defeated Jung via fourth-round TKO, leaving him with a flurry of strikes.

On October 4, 2014, Jung was scheduled to face Akira Corassani at UFC Fight Night 53. Jung, however, pulled out of the match due to another injury and was replaced by Max Holloway.

Jung revealed in mid-October 2014 that he would start his compulsory military service in his home country, South Korea. Although Jung did not have any information about the future at his death, his manager announced that after the two years, he would return to mixed martial arts.

Jung appeared in Rener Gracie's inaugural Korean Super Seminar in Seoul in mid-2016.

Dennis Bermudez was defeated by Jung at UFC Fight Night 104 on February 4, 2017. He won the fight by being knocked out in the first round. Jung received his first Performance of the Night bonus award as a result of his win.

On July 29, 2017, Jung was supposed to face Ricardo Lamas at UFC 214. Jung, on the other hand, pulled out of the game in early June due to a knee injury. Jason Knight was brought to him.

Jung was supposed to meet Frankie Edgar at UFC Fight Night 139 on November 10, 2018. Edgar was forced from the match due to injury, but Yair Rodrez replaced him. In the final second round of the fifth round, he lost the match by knockout. Both participants were given Fight of the Night awards.

On June 22, 2019, Jung faced Renato Moicano at UFC on ESPN+ 12. In 58 seconds of the first round, he defeated the opponent by technical knockout. This bout earned him the Night of the Night award.

Jung was supposed to face Brian Ortega on December 21, 2019 at UFC on ESPN+ 23. Ortega did not recover from the fight in early December due to a knee injury, and Frankie Edgar was recalled. In the first round, Jung defeated the opponent via TKO. Jung won the Nightcapture trophy as well as a trophy for being a winner.

On October 18, 2020, the match against Brian Ortega was postponed until UFC Fight Night 180. He lost by unanimous vote.

On ESPN, Jung defeated Dan Ige on June 19, 2021. He was victorious in the fight by unanimous vote. Jung was promoted to the rank of black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu following the war.

On April 9, 2022, Jung qualified for the UFC Featherweight Championship for the second time against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 273. Jung lost the match via TKO early in round four after being knocked down multiple times throughout the match.
