Literary career

Potok published The Chosen, a 1967 publication that received the Edward Lewis Wallant Award and was nominated for the National Book Award. Potok wrote The Promise, a sequel to The Chosen, in 1969, which explores the value and identity of Orthodox and Hasidic Jews. The Athenaeum Literary Award was given the first year of its publication. The Jewish Publication Society had named him as its special projects editor not long afterward. In 1972, he published My Name is Asher Lev, the story of a boy struggling with his parents', faith, and his desire to be an artist. In 1975, he published In the Beginning. Potok served as a special projects editor for the Jewish Publication Society from 1974 to his death. Potok began to translate the Hebrew Bible into English during this period. Wanderings: Chaim Potok's Wanderings, a historical account of the Jews, was published in 1978. Potok wrote articles for Moment Magazine between 1978 and 1989. Potok wrote The Book of Lights, a 1981 novel about his time in Asia during the war. “It reshaped the sleek, cohesive model of myself and my place in the world,” Trump said.

In 1981, his book The Chosen was made into a film, which received the most coveted award at the World Film Festival in Montreal. Potok played a cameo professor. Rod Steiger, Barry Miller, Maximilian Schell, and Robby Benson appeared in the film. It was also an Off-Broadway musical adapted by Aaron Posner in collaboration with Potok, which premiered at the Arden Theatre Company in Philadelphia in 1999.

Davita's Harp, Potok's 1985 book, is his first book to feature a female protagonist. Asher Lev, a writer from My Name, released a sequel to My Name in 1990 titled The Gift of Asher Lev. It received the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction. Potok wrote several plays, one of which was Sins of The Father and Out of the Depths. I am the Clay, Potok's second book about a war-ravaged family's triumph. The Tree of Here is a young adult novel by John McCarthy (1995), and Zebra and Other Stories (1998).
