The trendy diet that researchers suspect could fuel bowel cancers... as cases surge in under 50s

Proteins in food including milk, peanuts and eggs have long been known to cause allergic reactions. And even in people who aren't allergic, these proteins are often recognised by the immune system as foreign substances. But tests on mice, by researchers in Japan, now show that a diet that includes these substances could reduce the risk of tumours growing in the small intestine. The scientists, who today labelled the findings 'important', also warned people against deliberately restricting themselves of such foods to combat bloating or weight loss, if they don't suffer with allergies.
Breakthrough jab could turn the tide on 'epidemic' of young colon cancers
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 10, 2024
The jab, being developed by researchers at the University of Oxford, aims to bolster the immune system to hunt and destroy abnormal cells that will one day develop into cancer. It is aimed specifically at patients with bowel cancer caused by a genetic mutation known as Lynch syndrome - which increases the risk of the disease by 80 per cent. Some 1,100 bowel cancer cases in England each year are caused by Lynch syndrome, mostly in people aged under 50. Those with the genetic trait are far more likely to be diagnosed at a much younger age than average. The move comes just months after experts continued to express their ongoing concern over an 'epidemic' of bowel cancers, of which colon cancers are a sub-type, among young people. One of the recognised victims of the trend is Deborah James (inset) - known as 'bowel babe' - who was diagnosed at just 35 and raised millions for charity in her final days in 2022. James spoke of her rigorous exercise routine, and being in the best shape of her life when she developed the illness. Another example of seemingly fit and health women being hit by the disease was Zu Rafalat (right), of Finsbury Park, London , who died in 2020 aged 39.

Cancer deaths in men predicted to surge by terrifying 93 per cent by 2050, global study reveals - amid continued rise in younger people being hit by the disease
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 12, 2024
Experts have warned the global burden of cancer in men is set to rapidly rise in the coming decades if nothing is done to address the causes in a study using data from 185 nations. An estimated 19million cancer cases are predicted to be diagnosed in 2050 if current trends continue, up from 10million recorded in 2022. Cancer deaths are predicted to soar even higher, going from 5million in 2022 to over 10million by 2050, a rise of 93 per cent. While older men are predicted to account for the majority of fatalities in a pattern linked to ageing population, experts also predicted a concerning spike in young men being killed by the disease in the years to come. Male celebrities have also been caught in the rising pattern of increasing cancer cases in the young, known medically as 'early-onset' cancer, when the disease strikes people under the age of 50. Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman (left) is one, having been killed by colon cancer at 43. Whereas Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor (top right), who in 2008 revealed he had a cancerous mole removed from just below his right eye is another younger man hit by cancer.

People who use aspirin daily are at lower risk of COLON CANCER, study suggests
www.dailymail.co.uk,
April 22, 2024
Millions of people who take aspirin every day may be slashing their risk of developing colon cancer , according to a study. The over-the-counter medication is typically used to reduce inflammation and make blood less thick, reducing the risk of a heart attack or stroke. But researchers in Italy say small amounts of aspirin can also reach the colon via the digestive tract - where they have the opposite effect and may actually boost immune activity, raising the likelihood of cancers being detected and destroyed. The drug can also help to slow the spread of cancer to areas like lymph nodes, they added, from which it could spread to the rest of the body.
As scientists try to determine the origins of the startling rise, there is an alarm about a mysterious cancer 'epidemic' striking under 50s like Kate Middleton
www.dailymail.co.uk,
March 25, 2024
Kate Middleton's unexpected diagnosis of cancer at the age of 42 has put cases of the disease among young adults in the spotlight, but she is far from alone with such cases on the rise. Chadwick Boseman, The Wanted singer Tom Parker, and journalist Deborah James are among the three most famous people to have been killed by cancer before the age of 50, medically classified as 'early-onset' cancer. Some, like actress Oliva Munn, who at 43, have been diagnosed with breast cancer, while others that have not been diagnosed before the age of 50, include Michael C Hall of Dexter fame, Sofia Vergara of Modern Family, Stars Wars actor Ewan McGregor, and actress Kylie Minogue. According to UK results, although cancer rates have risen in both age groups, young people have died at a much faster rate. According to Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the cancer rate among younger Britons (ages 25 to 49) is now 162.4 cases per 100,000 people, up 21% from the 1990 figures.

Although overall cancer rates have gradually decreased in recent decades, doctors have been pleasantly surprised by a surge in colorectal cancer cases in younger adults, who have traditionally been at a low risk of the disease. Although experts can't say definitively why rates are skyrocketing, lifestyle choices, including diet, have been blamed as a contributing factor. Now, a cancer doctor (pictured) has three high-fiber breakfasts that may help prevent the disease, explaining that fiber is the most important because it feeds 'good' bacteria in the gut that shields the colon lining.

Taylor Simone Ledward-Boseman said people under the age of 50 should be aware of signs such as changes in bowel function and blood in stool, because the disease is expected to be the nation's biggest killer by 2030. She has also advised people to attend screenings, which are now available from the age of 45 years. Surgeons are now worried about a mystery rise in cases in the middle-aged, with mortality among under 55s increasing dramatically since the 1990s. In their study, medics looked at the signs found in 5,075 patients with early-onset colon cancer, which was diagnosed before their 50th birthday. They found four classic warning signs that existed up to two years before diagnosis: abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, persistent diarrhea, and iron deficiency anemia were all present. Surgeons are now worried about a mysterious increase in cases in the middle-aged, with incidences in children under the age of 60 increasing dramatically since the 1990s, although younger ones are worried about a disease of the old.

These Are the Biggest Snubs of the 2023 Oscars, from Angela Bassett to "Elvis."
www.popsugar.co.uk,
March 14, 2023
The 2023 Oscars saw "Everything Eleven All At Once" clinch many of the night's most coveted awards, ranging from best picture to best actress. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's beloved multiverse-hopping masterpiece, which also won big accolades for Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, was an extraordinary night for them. Even so, for every winner, there must be a loser, and "Everybody Else" was a hit movie that left many other films, from "Avatar: The Way of Water" to "Tár," entirely out of contention.
Despite deserving candidates, most of the show's winners were well-received. The track "Naatu Naatu" from "RRR" brought home the best original song, leaving out Lady Gaga and Rihanna after touching performances by each actor during the performance, though Lady Gaga's ecstatic reaction to the Tollywood song's triumph says it all. Meanwhile, some supporters, like first-time nominee Paul Mescal, were just glad to be there, while others, such as Hugh Grant, were miserable for reasons that had nothing to do with the evening's winners or losers. Nevertheless, some losses were more traumatic than others.

Rihanna wowed the audience at the Oscars 2023 ceremony on Sunday night by giving a moving appearance. On stage for a swanky Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, the pregnant singer performed flawlessly. Lift Me Up! After her set came to an end, her boyfriend A$AP Rocky, who shares a 10-month old boy, booed her proudly and raised his champagne glass to the singer. As she screamed a black bra underneath a bejeweled sheer top that revealed her growing baby bump, the hitmaker, 35, was draped in diamonds. The actress attracted a lot of attention as she smashed all the notes accompanied by a full orchestra. Since receiving her first-ever Academy Award nod for the track, which is an ode to late actor Chadwick Boseman, the singer appeared on the coveted Oscars stage.
