Chad Gable Career

Amateur wrestling career

Betts was a Minnesota high school state champion. In the final of the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials in the 84 kg class, he defeated Jordan Holm 2 to 0. He qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the Greco-Roman style 84 kg competition. In the qualifier round, he defeated Keitani Graham of the Federated States of Micronesia. Pablo Shorey of Cuba, who lost 3–0, had him barred from the tournament in the next round.

Professional wrestling career

Betts agreed to work with the professional wrestling promotion WWE in November 2013. Chad Gable, a nod to Olympian Dan Gable, was posted to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, and was given the ring name Chad Gable (a nod to Olympian Dan Gable). He made his in-ring debut at a NXT house show in Cocoa Beach, Florida, on September 5, 2014, defeating Troy McClain. On December 19, 2014, he played against then debuting Braun Strowman in a losing effort. He made his television debut on NXT's January 8, 2015 episode, losing to Tyler Breeze.

Following the dissolution of Jordan's team with Tye Dillinger, NXT newcomer Chad Gable began a storyline with Jason Jordan in which he tried to convince Jordan to form a new alliance. Jordan finally agreed to a tag team match against Gable as his teammate after nearly two months of coaxing. In their official debut together against Elias Samson and Steve Cutler's team, they were triumphant on the episode of NXT, Jordan and Gable on July 15. Jordan and Gable were involved in the first round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament on September 2, defeating Neville and Solomon Crowe's team. They will be ruled out of the tournament by Baron Corbin and Rhyno after defeating the Hype Bros. Although the pair became villains, they became fan favorites even in defeat, displaying fighting spirit and tenacity throughout the game. At NXT TakeOver: In a fatal four-way tag team match taped for the December 23 episode of NXT, London, Gable and Jordan were able to win. The NXT team of Jordan and Gable began using the term American Alpha on January 8 tapings.

On the March 16 episode of NXT in a number one contender's battle where they defeated Dash and Dawson, earning them a NXT Tag Team Championship match against NXT Takeover: Dallas. At the time, the two wrestlers captured the NXT Tag Team Championship. American Alpha lost the titles to The Revival on June 8 at NXT Takeover: The End, An American Alpha resurrects the title, bringing an end to their reign at 68 days. They were assaulted by Authors of Pain (Akam and Rezar), who were led by legendary coach Paul Ellering, after the match. The pair failed to win back the NXT Tag Team Championship after being defeated by Revival in a two out of three falls match on July 6 before wrestling their final match on NXT on July 20, where they were defeated by The Authors of Pain.

As a result of the 2016 WWE draft on July 19, the team was drafted to the SmackDown brand, becoming the first tag team pick overall. American Alpha made their debut on SmackDown's August 2nd episode, defeating The Valiantvillains. At SummerSlam, the pair teamed with The Usos and The Hype Bros to defy the Ascension, Breezango, and The Valiantvillains' crew. The pair then entered an eight-tag team tournament, which would determine the inaugural SmackDown Tag Team Champions, defeating Breezango in the first round to advance to the semi-finals against The Usos. Despite defeating The Usos quickly on the September 6 episode of SmackDown, Gable's knee was kayfabe after the Usos turned heel, leaving American Alpha unable to compete at Backlash and denouncing their bids to become the inaugural champions.

They returned on September 20 to face the Usos in a number one contender's match to determine who will meet inaugural Smackdown Tag Team Champions Heath Slater and Rhyno at No Mercy, where they were defeated due to Gable's injury. They would not represent the Hype Bros at the Ascension and the Vaindevillians, where they had won the competition. The American Alpha defeated The Spirit Squad on November 1st to qualify for Team SmackDown in the 10-on-ten Survivor Series tag team elimination match at Survivor Series. At the case, Team Raw defeated Team SmackDown, with American Alpha being eliminated by Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson after destroying The Shining Stars.

They defeated Randy Orton and Luke Harper of The Wyatt Family, Heath Slater and Rhyno, and The Usos in a four corners elimination match on December 27 before celebrating with their families afterwards. Despite losing to the Usos and Ascension, the two groups will continue their feud after defeating The Wyatt Family (Orton and Harper) in a rematch to reclaim their positions on January 10. After losing a non-title match to the pair the previous week, American Alpha lost the SmackDown Tag Team Championships to the Usos on March 21 episode of SmackDown Live. After failing in their WrestleMania 33 match against the Usos, Primo and Epico followed them after they defeated them the following week.

Chad Gable answered the United States Championship Open Challenge put forward by champion Kevin Owens on June 20, where he was ultimately unsuccessful. In a July interview, Gable discussed going solo, citing his desire to combat top opposition. Jason Jordan was transferred to the Raw brand on the July 17 episode of Raw. The team was effectively disbanded as a result of this.

General Manager Daniel Bryan announced on August 22 of SmackDown Live that he had recruited a returning Shelton Benjamin to team up with Gable, thus creating a tag team involving the two teams. In their first match as a tag team, SmackDown Live, Gable, and Benjamin won; this was also Benjamin's first WWE match since 2010. Benjamin and Gable will defeat the Hype Bros on September 12 episode of SmackDown Live before defeating them again in a rematch in a Cell. Benjamin and Gable will defeat The Hype Bros, The Ascension, Breezango, and Breezango in a critical four-way match on October 10 of SmackDown Live, advancing to the top one contenders for the Usos' SmackDown Tag Team Championship. The Usos won the match by count-out on November 7's episode of SmackDown Live, but the Usos retained their titles. They competed in a critical four-way match for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships against defending champions The Usos, The New Day, and the team of Rusev and Aiden English at Clash of Champions, but failed to win the titles. In a non-title match two days later on SmackDown Live, Gable and Benjamin defeated The Usos. They had essentially fallen backwards during a stretch of time when they had been wrestling the Usos for the Smackdown Live Tag Team Championships by displaying new barbaric tactics.

They defeated The New Day and Rusev and English in a triple threat match on January 2, 2018, the following week after losing the impromptu rematch and then losing the impromptu rematch. The pair announced their heel turn when they insulted the referee of their championship match the week before, demoralized the followers, and accused General Manager Daniel Bryan of being biased, resulting in Bryan's dismissal of the two teams from a three-fall match against the Usos in two straight falls. Benjamin and Gable interrupted an episode of Fashion Files this week and traded insults with Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango), threatening them to a match, and Benjamin would eventually win the match. In a losing effort, Gable and Benjamin mocked The New Day this week. On a losing effort, Benjamin and Shinsuke Nakamura met in a match against Shinsuke Nakamura before Nakamura defeated WWE Champion AJ Styles.

Gable was taken to Raw as part of the 2018 WWE Superstar Shake-Up, thus disbanding with Benjamin. On the episode of Raw, Gable turned face after he mocked Jinder Mahal for insulting Raw General Manager Kurt Angle. On his first match on the brand, Gable would defeat Mahal. Gable formed a tag team with Bobby Roode on September 3 and defeated The Ascension. They will be captains for Team Raw at Survivor Series, but they will lose to Team SmackDown in the 10-on-10 Survivor Series tag team elimination match. During this period, Gable changed his clothes to trunks and began wearing a robe in his entrance, mirroring Roode's appearance. Raw, Gable and Roode defeated AOP (Akam and Rezar) and their boss Drake Maverick in a three-on-two handicap on December 10 to win the Raw Tag Team Championship. With the victory, Gable became the second man (after his ex partner Jason Jordan) to win the NXT, SmackDown, and Raw Tag Team Championships.

Gable and Roode defeated Rezar and Scott Dawson in a non-title match at the Royal Rumble kick-off show. According to the match stipulation, if Rezar and Dawson were to win, their respective squads (AOP and The Revival) would both be eligible for tag team championship matches. On the February 11 episode of Raw, in which Gable and Roode lost the championship, the Revival would eventually face their crown match. In a triple threat tag-team match involving Ricochet and Aleister Black at Fastlane on March 11, Gable and Roode struggled to regain the trophy from The Revival.

Gable was drafted to SmackDown during the 2019 WWE Superstar Shake-Up. The Roode remained on Raw, effectively ending the team. Gable made a surprise appearance on 205 Live's June 11 episode, sporting a shorter haircut and trunks (as opposed to a singlet). He defeated Gentleman Jack Gallagher by a count out. On the epoch of 205 Live, where Gable emerged victorious, the two teams rematched.

Gable was announced as one of the sixteen participants in the King of the Ring in August. Gable defeated Shelton Benjamin in the first round of the tournament on August 27 on SmackDown Live's episode. Gable would eventually make it to the finals, defeating Andrade in the quarterfinals and Shane McMahon, who was a substitute for an injured Elias, in the semifinals. On the September 16 episode of Raw, Gable was then scheduled to face Baron Corbin in the finals, but was ultimately disqualified. Gable defeated King Corbin in a Cell, with the announcer naming him as "shorty Gable" (upon Corbin's boast of his height), which also became his ring name. On the October 18 episode of SmackDown, Gable's name will be reduced to "Shorty G."

Shorty G participated in a ten-man tag team competition against Team Hogan at the Crown Jewel Festival, winning the match against Team Flair. Shorty G competed as a member of Team SmackDown and was disqualified by Kevin Owens in the Survivor Series, but at Survivor Series, he was eliminated by Kevin Owens. However, his team won the match, but his team took the field. Shorty G began to wrestle in the tag team division after this appearance, with Mustafa Ali as his partner. Sheamus recovered from injury on January 3, 2020, but then delivered a Brogue Kick to Shorty G from an attack by The Revival (Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson). On the January 31 episode of SmackDown, Sheamus defeated Shorty G at Royal Rumble and Shorty G at SmackDown. Shorty G returned to television on May 29 in a 10-man battle royal for a spot in the Intercontinental Championship tournament, but was disqualified by Cesaro. Shorty G defeated Cesaro later in the night. Shorty Glock had a tumultuous day on July 31 by attacking Matt Riddle from behind and identifying himself with King Corbin, but the alliance storyline was discarded.

After losing to Lars Sullivan, Chad Gable's episode on October 23 appeared to have renamed him "Shorty G" and reverted to the ring name Chad Gable. Gable began the Alpha Academy on November 13 and attempted to enroll Otis as his client, turning face in the process. The team made their debut on December 11 in SmackDown's debut, losing to Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura's team. Tables, Ladders, Chairs, Gable and Otis, together with Big E and Daniel Bryan, defeated Cesaro, Nakamura, King Corbin, and Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn in an eight-man tag team match at TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs, Gable and Otis. Gable ordered Otis to assault Rey Mysterio after their tag team match on February 19, 2021, reverting back to a heel once more.

Both Gable and Otis were drafted to the Raw brand as part of the 2021 Draft. Alpha Academy's RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Riddle) defeated RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Riddle) to win the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship on January 10, 2022, marking Gable's second appearance with the title. Alpha Academy's RK-Bro episode on March 7, 2022, brought the titles back to RK-Bro, snapping their reign at 55 days. Alpha Academy failed to recover the RK-Bro titles on Day 2 of WrestleMania 38, which also involved The Street Profits.

ALEX MCCARTHY IN LOS ANGELES: Chad Gable and Otis are two actors who became famous with the WWE Universe for different reasons, but they have taken it one step further by teaming up. In a losing effort, the true-life close friends teamed up at WrestleMania 39, but Gable has been lauded for his in-ring display, which featured a rolling German suplex on the 6ft8in Braun Strowman. Fans have always lauded Gable's in-ring abilities, and Otis has the innate charisma that WWE's top brass so desperately craves.
