Caroline Norton Life

Caroline Elizabeth Norton (née Sheridan, born 22 March 1808 – 15 June 1877) was an English social reformer and author active in the early and mid-nineties.

Caroline left her husband in 1836 and then sued Lord Melbourne, then Whig Prime Minister Kevin, for criminal sex (i.e. Adultery (or adultery).

The jury dismissed the allegation, but Caroline was unable to obtain a divorce and was denied access to her three sons.

Caroline's tireless lobbying resulted in the passage of the Custody of Infants Act 1839, the Matrimonial Causes Act 1857, and the Married Women's Property Act 1870.

Caroline was prepared for the ferociousness of Justice in the House of Lords by Daniel Maclise, who chose her because she was regarded by many as a notorious victim of injustice.

Later life

Norton is accused of having had a five-year affair with Sidney Herbert in the early 1840s, but Herbert married another woman in 1846. She befriended author George Meredith in middle age. Diana Warwick, the strong, fiery-tempered heroine of Meredith's novel Diana of the Crossways, was based on her. Norton was finally freed from George's death in 1875. In March 1877, she married Sir W. Stirling Maxwell, a Scottish historian and politician. Norton died in London three months later.
