Carol Kirkwood (born 29 May 1962) is a Scottish weather presenter who has been trained by the Met Office and recruited by the BBC, particularly on BBC Breakfast and Victoria Derbyshire.

She appeared in the 13th series of BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, finishing in 10th place.

Early life

Carol MacKellaig was born in Morar, Inverness-shire, on May 29th, 1962, she was one of eight children of parents who were hoteliers. Kirkwood earned a BA in Commerce from Napier College of Commerce and Technology (now Edinburgh Napier University) in Edinburgh after attending Lochaber High School in Fort William.

Personal life

She was married to Jimmy Kirkwood, but the couple divorced in 2008. On May 23, 2022, Kirkwood revealed her engagement to her new partner, who appeared live on BBC Breakfast from the Chelsea Flower Show.

Career

Kirkwood joined the BBC's undercover reserve in London after graduation. She appeared on BBC Radio Scotland, then BBC Radio Scotland, and then BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4. She left the BBC and then worked as a training consultant for a management consultancy in Cheshire following her marriage to Jimmy Kirkwood. She and Sacha Baron Cohen spent time on a now defunct cable TV channel in Windsor, later referred to as Wire TV.

Kirkwood returned to the BBC as a freelance presenter in 1993, where she also hosted a bi-monthly program on HTV West. Kirkwood started with The Weather Channel in 1996, but after it was closed, she underwent training under the Met Office's direction before joining BBC News in April 1998 as a weather presenter. She has since been on both radio and television, including BBC News, BBC World News, BBC News at Six, and live forecasts as part of BBC Weather's coverage of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

On BBC Breakfast, Kirkwood is the main weather presenter. In 2013, the service moved from London to MediaCityUK in Salford, but Kirkwood stayed in London, presenting the weather on Breakfast via video link. She appeared on The Weather Show of the BBC and is also a regular contributor and reporter for The One Show. Kirkwood co-presented The Great British Weather on BBC One in 2011. On BBC Radio 2's The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, she also forecast the weather.

Kirkwood has appeared on CBBC's Hacker Time as a guest. Would I Lie to You? Kirkwood made a cameo appearance on Hollyoaks in October 2018.

Kirkwood will appear in the thirteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing, which began in September 2015. Pasha Kovalev, a professional dancer, was partnered with her.

Naga Munchetty playfully took a swipe at her co-star Carol Kirkwood during Thursday's BBC Breakfast.  The newsreader, 49, claimed the meteorologist, 61, was 'of no importance' after Carol made an awkward blunder.    After wrapping her weather segment, she handed back over to Naga and Ben Thompson in the studio but appeared to forget Naga's name.
