Carmen Carrera (born April 13, 1985) is a television actress, model, burlesque performer, and actress best known for her appearance on the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race, as well as its spin-off series RuPaul's Drag U. Carrera.
Personal life
Carrera had been working with Adrian Torres since 2009, but she revealed in 2013 that they had broken up. While being filmed for the Couples Therapy television show by 2015, the two were reunited and receiving relationship support. During filming for the show, they wept on June 10, 2015, which aired as the season's finale on December 9, 2015.
Carrera had publicly identified as a gay man and continued to appear as such during the shooting of RuPaul's Drag Race's third season, but she began to transition after filming ended. She is of Puerto Rican-Peruvian descent.
Life and career
Carrera was born in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. She appeared on RuPaul's Drag Race, the reality television competition competition show, in 2011. Carrera is the second contestant in the show's history (after season three castmate Shangela) to return to the cast after being barred, and along with Raja, Manila Luzon, and Delta Work, the "Heathers" clique, which takes its name from the 1988 film Heathers. Carrera was booted from her appearance in episode 10, "RuPaul-a-Palooza," she was disregarded for lip-syncing to a reggae-inspired cover of RuPaul's "Superstar." In episode 12, "Jocks in Frocks," Judges Michelle Visage, Santino Rice, and Billy Brasfield all voted to admit Carrera to the competition. Carrera was notably cut in the episode after styling a muscular male character in her own signature "nude" style of drag.
W's November 2011 issue featured a line of fictional items in realistically styled advertisements as part of an issue-wide art project. Carrera was featured in the film as the face for the fictional fragrance La Femme. Carrera appeared in a television commercial for travel-related website Orbitz in 2011.
Carrera has also been involved in AIDS awareness and activism. The dress she wore was auctioned by Logo in commemoration of World AIDS Day after being included in a Gilead Sciences commercial titled "Red Ribbon Runway" with fellow Drag Race co-stars Manila Luzon, Delta Work, Shangela Laquifa Wadley, and Alexis Mateo. The National Association of People with AIDS was given a million dollar donation from the auction.

What Would You Do In an episode of ABC News' Primetime: What Would You Do? Carrera played a transgender server in a New Jersey diner on May 4, 2012. Carrera's character is slashed after she had been served by her as a male, prompting other customers to come out in support of Carrera's defense. Carrera also revealed herself to be transgender in this program, marking the first time in which Carrera openly admitted to being transgender.
Carrera appeared in an episode of TLC's Cake Boss, "Bar Mitzvah, Beads & Oh Baby" on June 11, 2012. "She unknowingly participated in a prank involving "Cousin Anthony" Bellifemine, the cousin of "Cake Boss" Buddy Buddy Buddy Buddy Valastro who was on hand with Carrera, who was also on the lookout for her. Valastro was joking about Bellifemine's remark that "... that's a man, baby." Carrera, on the other hand, had planned to attend the initiative to promote equality for the transgender group but was unaware that she would be part of a joke. Carrera rebuked the situation on Facebook after the show was broadcast: Carrera rebuked it on Facebook.
Valastro later apologised for the incident, saying that the company apologised for the crash.
"Bar Mitzvah, Beads & Oh Baby" appeared on TLC's website the following day. With the network's intention to re-edit the episode for future broadcasts, it had been barred from rotation indefinitely.
During the 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, a petition began demanding that Carrera appear as a model, but the petition was rejected due to media coverage and nearly 45,000 signatures.
Carrera openly chastised RuPaul for using the pejorative "she-male" on a RuPaul's Drag Race episode in March 2014. When RuPaul's "Female or SheMale" game came up in 2015, she remained skeptical of the word "tranny," prompting RuPaul to defend the use of the word "tranny." Carrera's continuing demonstrations culminated in accusations that she was biting the hand that fed her. Carrera said that although she likes the opportunity to compete on DragRace, she earned her fame through her dedication and the support she gave RuPaul for her transphobic words.
Carrera was included in photographer David LaChapelle's book The Carrera was included in the collection of photographers David LaChapelle. She posed for a poster for Life Ball, which has two versions; each depicts her with distinct genitalia to indicate gender confusion.
