Monaghan, who began his career as a child model and a child actor at the age of seven, is best known for his role as Ian Gallagher on the Showtime comedy-drama series Shameless.

Early life
Monaghan was born in Santa Monica, California, as Diane Monaghan's only child and single mother. He and his mother migrated to Boca Raton, Florida, right after his birth. Recognizing that Monaghan was an exceptional outgoing boy, his mother sent his photo to modeling companies when he was three years old. He appeared on the front of his first catalogue at the age of five and was in his first regional commercial at seven.

Monaghan began playing Chad, one of Dewey's classmates on Fox's Malcolm in the Middle, earning him the Young Artist Award as the Best Young Television Actor in a Recurring Role.
