High school career
Before being a junior in high school, Johnson was a 6-foot-2 point guard before being a source of growth. He graduated from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Johnson averaged 27.8 points, eight rebounds, and five assists per game as a senior at OLSH. He won 1,175 points in his career. In April 2014, he signed with Pittsburgh.
College career
Johnson sustained a knee injury shortly into his first year at Pittsburgh, and he was allowed to redshirt during the season in order to recover from injury. During his redshirt freshman year, he was used as a substitute. Johnson, a Pitt redshirt sophomore, averaged 11.9 points per game and made 41.5% of his three-point attempts. In three years, Johnson earned a degree in communications from Pittsburgh. He took advantage of the graduate transfer policy and moved to North Carolina without waiting out a year. The University of Pittsburgh initially refused to release him to their in-conference rival Tar Heels, but eventually relented. He cited uncertainty in teaching and a losing record as reasons for his decision to transfer.
Johnson underwent surgery on November 15, 2017, five days after his team's season opener, to repair a torn meniscus. Johnson played out ten games instead of sitting out. Despite being limited by the injury, Johnson finished third on the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game as well as grabbing 4.7 rebounds per game in his redshirt junior season. Johnson scored a career-high 32 points against Clemson. Johnson underwent anarthroscopic hip surgery and revealed that he would return to North Carolina for his senior season.
Johnson's senior season was his most financially productive campaign. Professional career
Johnson was the eleventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft on June 20, 2019, then the Phoenix Suns traded him and Dario ari to the Phoenix Suns for Jartt Culver, the sixth pick of the draft. The transaction was officially concluded on July 6, with the Suns later announcing that they had signed Johnson the same day. Johnson made his NBA debut off the bench on October 26, 2019 over the Los Angeles Clippers. In a 120-116 loss to the Sacramento Kings on November 19, he scored a season-high 18 points on November 19. In a 139-132 overtime victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on December 5, Johnson tied his season high.
He made his first professional appearance against the Los Angeles Lakers on February 10, 2020. In a 123-114 loss to the defending champion Toronto Raptors on March 3, 2020, Johnson scored a new season-high of 21 points on his 24th birthday.
