McSwiggan is best known for making video clips relating to LGBT+ issues, mental health, and sex and romance.

In 2013, he began making YouTube videos and hosted the Calum McSwiggan Show on Fubar Radio in 2017.

Personal life

McSwiggan was born in Nottingham and grew up in Derbyshire. He earned a degree in Creative Writing and worked abroad for several years as an English teacher in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. He spent time in a zoo in Thailand, raising and caring for tiger cubs. He worked with Terrence Higgins Trust in London before becoming a freelance blogger and online radio host in 2018.

McSwiggan began promoting YouTube videos in September 2013 and was selected as a finalist in Lastminute.com's national search for a travel blogger later this year. In June 2015, McSwiggan collaborated with LGBT+ charity organisation Switchboard (UK) to help with their relaunch with a series of videos starring notable LGBT+ stars, including Tom Daley, George Takei, and Matt Lucas. McSwiggan produced an award-winning documentary about mental health in 2016, and his Love Happens Here video received the highest LGBT+ short film at the Buffer Festival in Toronto in 2017.

McSwiggan was Entertainment editor for the University of Derby's "Dusted" in 2008 and unveiled his first piece of work in the prose and poetry anthology What We Didn't Know. McSwiggan began blogging about travelling alone in 2011 and went on to contribute to a number of publications, including Hannah Witton's sex education book Doing It. He began a relationship with literary agent Diamond Kahn & Woods in 2017, which was his first book.

McSwiggan began his teaching career at University, where he hosted a radio show with colleague, author Laura Jane Williams. On FUBAR Radio, he hosted The Calum McSwiggan Show, which attracted LGBT+ guests such as Munroe Bergdorf and Rose McGowan. The show has devoted itself to LGBT+ artists, and it exclusively features LGBT+ artists. McSwiggan has also addressed a variety of LGBT+ topics on radios, including Gaydio and BBC Radio 2. McSwiggan has also co-presented an episode of BBC Radio 4's Gay Britannia, and has appeared on a 24-hour live radio broadcast for UN Women.

McSwiggan released a video in January 2016. I Did Gay Porn And I'm Sorry for an event where a leaked video of him performing a variety of explicit sex acts was posted online. He was later chastised by a slew of gay pornographic artists who said that his views were demonizing of the profession.

After reportedly being assaulted during a suspected hate crime in Los Angeles in June 2016, McSwiggan confessed to vandalism. As part of a plea bargain, the accusation of filing a false police report was dismissed. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that the injuries sustained during the shooting were uninflicted and that the suspected hate crime was a hoax.
