Reckful Life

Byron Bernstein (born May 8, 1989), better known by his online alias Reckful, is an American Twitch streamer and former professional eSports player.

He is currently working with his colleagues to create "Everland," a video game.

In June 2018, he launched Tea Time with Byron, a podcast that features long-form interviews with influential guests in the gaming and streaming industries.

Bernstein is best known in the game community for his participation in World of Warcraft and Asheron's Call.

Personal life

Byron Daniel Bernstein was born in Los Angeles, Germany, to Itamar and Judith Bernstein. Guy and Gary were two older brothers; Guy, the oldest, committed suicide when Bernstein was six years old; Gary, the youngest, was killed when Bernstein was six. Bernstein said he was a "nerdy kid" in elementary school who no one liked, and he was mocked for his inability to speak English, his second language. Bernstein said he was a gifted mathematic who was good at math but was denied from enrolling in classes because being made fun of him. He met new people at school but said his life revolved around playing Asheron's Call, which fell out of vogue as World Warcraft was becoming more popular, and he plunged into bouts of depression and attempted to murder himself at 16. He dropped out of high school later this year, owing to both anxiety and depression. He said he knew that video games were a form of escapism for him.

Bernstein said that his brother's death had a major effect on his life and his subsequent bouts with depression. As an infant, Bernstein was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder. Bernstein said that his family was reluctant to let him try selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors because they believed it led to his brother's death. On a trip to Amsterdam, he tried psilocybin mushrooms, which he claimed to have helped him for the first time.

Bernstein died by suicide on July 2, 2020.

Reckful Career

Career

Bernstein, a gifted World of Warcraft student best known for his innovative teaching style of the "rogue" class, was a pioneer of Twitch video game live streaming. He began playing in the top 0.1% of the game without the use of what was considered essential gameplay mechanics at the time. Multiple competitive seasons in a row, he ranked in the top 0.1% of the player base. He competed in a handful of tournaments and won the Major League Games' World of Warcraft tournament in 2010.

In 2011, Bernstein released Reckful 3. The video gained one million views in less than a week (as of January 2022, it had over six million viewers). He later won the WarcraftMovies top-skilled competition, in which players cast their vote for player of the year. He began working as a programmer, operations manager, and concept designer for Feenix, a game mouse company. He began his YouTube channel in October 2012 and released Reckful 5 stack Taste for Blood in November, his first video.

Bernstein was ranked fourth in The Gazette Review's list of top-ten richest streamers in 2017. He said he had a net worth of $1.5 million and that he was getting more than 50,000 viewers per month.

Bernstein played poker and qualified for the 2016 Unibet Open London main event but was disqualified early. He appeared in a charity poker tournament sponsored by PokerGO in November 2017. ItHafu won the competition.

Bernstein launched Tea Time with Byron in May 2018, which features long-form interviews with influential celebrities from gaming and streaming communities such as Pokimane and Hikaru Nakamura. A total of six episodes were released, the last one being released on March 31, 2020.

Bernstein was planning to create Everland, a pre-death MMO.

In August 2020, Blizzard and World of Warcraft paid tribute to Bernstein with an in-game trainer named after his online alias Reckful. The character is brought to life inside the Cathedral of Light, an in-game landmark where the community gathered to thank Bernstein for his service after the news of his death.

Mitch Jones, a Twitch streamer, wrote and published "Now That You Are Gone" in 2021, which chronicles Jones and Bernstein's friendship.
