Bruno Fernando Career

High school career

Bruno Fernando, a native of Luanda, Angola, started playing basketball in his hometown. During his 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship with the Angolan national team, he caught the eye of scouts in the United States. He joined Montverde, Florida, in early 2015. In April 2016, he accepted Southern Methodist University, but he reclassified into the Class of 2017. He attended IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from 2016 to 17. Bruno Fernando, a poet who was also considering Auburn, Alabama, and Florida State among other things, committed to the University of Maryland in October 2016.

College career

Fernando made his Maryland debut against Stony Brook on November 10, 2017. He came off the bench with two rebounds, one block, and one steal in 13 minutes of playing time. In a 91-73 victory over Iowa, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after having 17 points and 11 rebounds against Penn State and a career-high 21 points. He had a good freshman season, with averages of 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, as well as All-Big Ten Freshman recognitions. Fernando qualified for the 2018 NBA draft and appeared in the NBA Draft Combine that year but was unable to return to Maryland after the season.

Professional career

Fernando was selected as the 34th pick of the 2019 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. Fernando was the first Angolan player to be chosen in the NBA draft. He was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks announced on July 7, 2019 that they had signed Fernando. Fernando played his debut in NBA on October 24, 2019, rising off the bench to win 117-100 over the Detroit Pistons with seven points, three rebounds, and two assists. On November 25, he was assigned to the College Park Skyhawks, Hawks' NBA G League affiliate. That evening, he made his G League debut. Fernando missed several games in January 2020 due to his mother's death.

During an altercation between the Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers on June 20, 2021, Fernando was suspended for one game without compensation for missing the bench.

Fernando was traded to the Boston Celtics in a three-team trade involving the Sacramento Kings on August 7, 2021. Fernando made his Maine Celtics debut on November 19, 2021, scoring four points and shooting 100% from the field.

The Houston Rockets acquired Fernando, Enes Freedom, and Dennis Schröder from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Daniel Theis on February 10, 2022.

Fernando re-signed with the Rockets in a two-way contract on July 26, 2022. The Rockets converted his two-way contract into a four-year, $10.9 million contract on October 2, converting it into a four-year, $10.9 million contract. In a 117-107 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on October 19, he got his first appearance on the team, nine-rebound, and seven-assist.

National team career

He averaged 9.1 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per contest for the Angolan national team, who were competing in the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Dubai. Bruno Fernando made his debut with Angola's men's national team in 2016 and competed in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade. He led Angola to gold at the 2016 FIBA Africa Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.3 points, 6.6 boards, 2.1 assists, and 1.6 blocks per game, while receiving Afrobasket.com All-African Championships U18 Best Player awards.

He later joined the Angola senior team for the 2018 Olympic Qualifiers. He did not represent his country for four years before returning in August 2022 for Angola's World Cup qualifiers.
