Bruce Halle Life

Bruce Thomas Halle (May 27, 1930 – January 4, 2018) was an American businessman and chairman of Discount Tire.

At the time of his death, he was Arizona's richest individual, with a net worth of $5.2 billion.

Early life and education

Bruce Halle was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on May 27, 1930, as the second of seven children to Catholic parents, Frederick Joseph "Fred" Halle Sr. and his wife, Marry Elizabeth "Molly" McKelvey; both married in 1927. Alfred Antoine Halle, his French-Canadian grandfather, had arrived in Berlin, New Hampshire, with his wife and two sons in the mid-1880s. He helped his family during the Great Depression by cutting grass and digging graves. Bruce and his two sons returned home to Berlin, where they lived with Molly's parents at a few blocks from St. Kieran's Catholic Church. His father was a firefighter at the Berlin Fire Department and later became deputy chief. Fred's family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked as a security guard at Ford Motor Company's Rouge River plant. Bruce served in the Korean War in 1950 and spent a tour of duty. In 1956, he landed in Michigan and graduated with a BBA from Eastern Michigan University.

Personal life

Geraldine "Gerry" Konfara Halle, Halle's childhood sweetheart, died of cancer in 1989. Gerry's death was a "huge, devastating blow" to him, according to his biographer. Bruce Halle's children were all born with his first wife Gerry. They had three children, Bruce Jr., Susan, and Lisa Pedersen.

Diane Meyers Halle, Halle's second wife, married him ten years later in 1999. Diane was the widow of another Arizona millionaire. They lived in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Halle died on January 4, 2018, at the age of 87. He was survived by three children, his wife, a brother, and two sisters.
