With 'Nicole, Niki Honors Her Past Self.'

www.mtv.com, August 15, 2022
Most artists can't say they made their best work while in high school, but then again, Niki has never been like most artists. Despite her massive success as "the internet's most popular R&B queen" with hundreds of millions of streams, headlining slots at major festivals, and placements on Marvel soundtracks, the 23-year-old singer's most memorable creations were the indie-folk songs she wrote in her bedroom as a child. Nicole, her sophomore album, a 12-track epic chronicling the ups and flows of her first marriage, Niki creates a sonic time machine that transports us right back to Jakarta's high school. Before the 88rising's Niki, there was YouTube's nzee24, an account started by a 15-year-old Nicole Zefanya out of her parents' house in Indonesia. Though she grew up hearing her mother's musical choices, which fluctuated between Christian gospel and "90s R&B, teenage Niki migrated to the sounds of bands like Bright Eyes and The Paper Kites, as well as Taylor Swift's lyrics. Niki added 11 original indie tracks to her channel over the course of her high school career, most of which she retained in 2017 in the name of "rebranding."

Head In The Clouds An Entire Stadium With Asian Joy has been stuffed with head and shoulders

www.mtv.com, November 11, 2021
By Kelly Nguyen It was an absolute joy to attend the 88th anniversary of the Head in the Clouds festival. On November 6 and 7, the sun was shining in the form of history in the making: Every space inside Pasadena's Rose Bowl Stadium was woven with Asians and Asian Americans owning their power. An Asian plaza-inspired sign led crowds to the festival's heart and soul — Asian-owned restaurants and businesses — in the middle of the gathering. Festival-goers — dressed in everything from Joji's Pink Guy skin-tight bodysuit to an outfit based on the Philippines' national flag — gathered up in Bopomofo's spicy Sichuan.
