Brent Tate Life

Brent Tate (born 3 March 1982) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played as a centre or winger in the 2000s and 2010s.

He played for the Brisbane Broncos (with whom he won the 2006 NRL Premiership), the New Zealand Warriors, and the North Queensland Cowboys, an Australia international and Queensland State of Origin representative.

Despite a career marred by a string of injuries, Tate kept returning and was a member of the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, and 2013 World Cup Australian sides, as well as the 2008 and 2013 World Cup Australian sides, winning the 2013 edition with them.

Early life

Tate was born in Roma, Queensland, and migrated to Redcliffe at the age of 9. He participated in junior rugby for the Redcliffe Dolphins and attended Clontarf Beach State High School, where he represented the Australian Schoolboys in 1999. He was a scholarship holder with the South Queensland Crushers and joined the Brisbane Broncos shortly after the Crushers folded.

Personal life

Tate is the brother-in-law of Steve Price, who competed for the Warriors, Queensland, and Australia, as well as Giants Netball player Jamie-Lee Price.

Brent Tate Career

Professional playing career

In a match against the Melbourne Storm at the Colonial Stadium, Tate made his National Rugby League debut for the Brisbane Broncos in Round 21 of the 2001 season. In 2002, he was awarded his first representative honours by playing for Queensland in Game 3 of the 2002 State of Origins competition. Tate scored 11 tries to 2 in their best victory margin over the Lions on Tuesday, on his international debut for Australia from the bench in a one-off match against Great Britain at the Sydney Football Stadium on July 12, 2002. After scoring 10 tries in 23 games, he was named the 2002 Brisbane Broncos season's rookie of the year. In the end-of-season Test match against New Zealand at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, Tate made his run-on debut for Australia.

Tate maintained his good form in 2003, rising to the Queensland starting team for all three State of Origin games, scoring 2 tries in Game 3. In the Anzac Test against New Zealand in Sydney, he was still selected for Australia, scoring two tries as Australia defeated the Kiwis 48–6. Tate, on the other hand, sustained a career-threatening neck injury that has affected him ever since, and his career has only been enhanced with the help of a specialized neck brace. His neck injury kept him out of the 2004 season, but he recovered in time for the Anzac Test and continued to receive representative selections for both Queensland and Australia. Tate's 2005 season was a disappointing one, with more injuries preventing him from participating in the 2005 State of Origins series. Despite this, Robbie's form for the Broncos saw him selected for the Australian team for the end of season Tri-Nations tournament against New Zealand and hosts Great Britain.

Tate was hospitalized for the first part of the season in 2006, but he made a remarkable comeback in Game 1 of the State of Origins. Tate scored a crucial try in Game 3 in Melbourne, kicking off a Queensland comeback that culminated in them winning the match and the series. For the first time in his Origins career, he was named man-of-the-match for Game 3.

Tate was also an integral part of the Brisbane Broncos' 2006 NRL Grand Finals team, winning national recognition for the 2006 Tri-Nations. Australia defeated defending champions New Zealand in the final at the Sydney Football Stadium, winning by 16–12 in extra time, thanks in large part to captain Darren Lockyer's efforts. Tate scored Australia's only other game on the wing. The Brisbane Broncos travelled to England to face the 2006 Super League champions, St Helens R.F.C., as the 2006 NRL Premiers. In the 2007 World Club Challenge, Michael Rowe was the most successful. In the Broncos' 14–18 loss, Tate was centre.

Tate would leave the Broncos at the end of the 2007 season to join the New Zealand Warriors on a three-year deal, as revealed on the 30th of May 2007. Due to his ability to play in his new position of center, he decided to join the Warriors.

Tate was chosen to represent Australia's national team on the wing in the 2007 ANZAC Test match against New Zealand, scoring a try in the Kangaroos' 30–6 victory. His time with the Broncos was cut short when playing for Queensland during Game III of the 2007 State of Origin series, where he sustained a season-ending knee injury to the medial and anterior cruciate ligaments.

At the Telstra Dome, Tate made his New Zealand Warriors debut against the Melbourne Storm in Round 1, 2008 (the same stadium in which he made his NRL debut for Brisbane).

Tate was named in the Australia training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup in August 2008, and in October 2008, he was selected in the final 24-man Australia squad. However, he did not participate in the final of the World Cup due to injury, with the Kangaroos losing the final to New Zealand 20–34, giving the Kiwis their first-ever World Cup victory.

Tate was named on the bench in the Australian Schoolboys Team of the Century in September 2008.

Tate's 2009 season was cut short when he suffered another season-ending injury while trying to recover his anterior cruciate ligament in the process of being tackled.

Tate returned to the field in 2010, but with injuries to Steve Price, Simon Mannering, and Micheal Luck, Tate was in charge of the Warriors' captain early in the season. The Warriors won their first game under Tate's captaincy, defeating Canterbury 30–24 in Round 5 at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney. However, they were defeated 42–12 in their next game against Penrith at Mt Smart, who were home.

Tate declared that his three-year appearance on the New Zealand side was over, opting to return to Queensland to play for the North Queensland Cowboys on June 23, 2010. Tate described the decision as the "most he's ever had to make" because of the difficult decision.

Tate was again selected for Australia's Four Nations campaign at the end of the 2010 season (the tournament had been extended to include a fourth team in 2009). Tate, who played for Australia in the final in which he scored a try), was the tournament's top try scorer with four points alongside Junior Sa'u (NZ) and Tony Clubb (England). In every game he played against Papua New Guinea, England, and NZ, Tate had scored a try.

In the 2011 edition of the Four Nations Finals, Tate's first season with the North Queensland outfit was marred by the rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). For the third time in his career, the injury forced him to do knee replacement. He was forced to cancel his participation in round 19 of the 2011 season, but he made his North Queensland debut in round 19 of the 2011 season and was active in the team's qualifying final loss to the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Tate continued to play for Queensland in the 2012 State of Origin series, assisting the Maroons in their seventh series victory in a row dating back to 2006.

In the first game of the 2013 Origin series, Tate was selected on the wing for Qld. Despite the Maroons losing 14–6 to NSW in Sydney, he retained his position for Game 2 of the series in Brisbane. In Queensland's victory in the third and deciding game of the series, Tate was named man-of-the-match, extending their undefeated streak to eight games in the series.

In the 2014 State of Origins series, Tate continued to play for Queensland. Tate sustained another ACL knee injury during his second game of the State of Origins series.

Tate resigned from Rugby League on September 3rd, 2014, after receiving medical advice that returning from the ruptured ACL suffered during the year's State of Origin series was one fight too many.
