Brent Grimes Career

Professional career

The Atlanta Falcons announced Grimes to a three-year, $1.08 million contract on May 16, 2006, when he went undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Grimes trained for a roster spot as a back-up and special teams player during training camp. Before suffering a groin injury, he competed against Chris Cash, Allen Rossum, and Omare Lowe. During training camp, the Atlanta Falcons then waived him.

The Atlanta Falcons signed Grimes to a reserve/futures deal and immediately assigned him to play in NFL Europa on January 10, 2007. Grimes was initially acquired by the Amsterdam Admirals before being a part of the Rhein Fire and then the Hamburg Sea Devils. He started at a cornerback for the Sea Devils and helped them beat a 7–3 record and finish first in their division. Grimes appeared in World Bowl XV and was a member of the Hamburg Sea Devils team that beat the Frankfurt Galaxy 37–28 on June 23, 2007.

Grimes returned to the Atlanta Falcons and completed team activities and training camp after winning World Bowl XV. Grimes competed against Antoine Harris and David Irons in camp as a back-up cornerback and special teams player. The Atlanta Falcons cut Grimes as part of their final roster cuts on September 2, 2007, but the following day he re-signed him to their practice squad.

After cornerback Lewis Sanders tore his pectoral muscle and was put on injured reserve, the Atlanta Falcons promoted him to their active roster on December 17, 2007. Bobby Petrino, the Falcons' head coach, resigned from his position after just 13 games, including a 3–10 record, on December 12, 2007. After quarterback Michael Vick was jailed for operating an unlawful interstate dog fighting operation, Petrino decided to accept the open head coaching position at Arkansas. Grimes, the third cornerback on the depth chart, after DeAngelo Hall and Chris Houston, was named by interim head coach Emmitt Thomas. During a 30-27 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on December 23, 2007, Grimes made his professional regular season debut and posted a season-high 11 combined tackles (ten solo) on December 23, 2007. He played in two games and no starts in his rookie season in 2007.

After DeAngelo Hall was traded to the Oakland Raiders, he was battling to be a starting cornerback during training camp. He competed against Von Hutchins, David Irons, and Chevis Jackson. Grimes quickly rose to the top of the depth chart and stunned many analysts with his work in training camp. Mike Smith, the Atlanta Falcons' new head coach, and Chris Houston joined the Grimes as a starting cornerback in the 2008 regular season.

In Atlanta's 34-21 victory, he made his debut in the Atlanta Falcons' season-opener against the Washington Redskins, receiving a season-high six solo tackles. He played for 49 total tackles (37 solo), 14 passes defensed, and an interceptor in 12 games and 12 starts, with an interception in 19 games and 12 starts.

For the forthcoming 2012 season, the Atlanta Falcons used their franchise tag to Grimes on March 2, 2012. Grimes signed his one-year, $10.60 million franchise tag on April 24, 2012 after rumors that the Falcons were in search of a trade to acquire cornernack Asante Samuel.

Grimes and Dunta Robinson were the starting cornerbacks for the Atlanta Falcons' new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, ahead of Asante Samuel. He started with the Kansas City Chiefs and made six solo tackles before losing in the fourth quarter of the Atlanta Falcons' 40–24 victory due to a calf injury. After finding that he'd need to have surgery for a torn Achilles tendon, the Atlanta Falcons put Grimes on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Grimes became an unrestricted free agent following the 2012 season. Grimes was not offered a deal by the Atlanta Falcons. Grimes paid visits to the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins during their free agency.

The Miami Dolphins signed Grimes to a one-year, $5.50 million contract with a $2.75 million guarantee on March 30, 2013.

The Miami Dolphins signed Grimes to a four-year, $32 million deal, with $16 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $6 million. The deal is only guaranteed for the first two seasons, and it does not allow the Dolphins to opt-out of the deal in 2016 or 2017.

Along Cortland Finnegan, defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle saved Grimes as a starting pointback. When both teams entered the league in 2006, stood at 5'10" and became Pro Bowl cornerbacks, Grimes and Finnegan drew comparisons based on their small school pedigree.

In a 27-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers, he had season-high seven solo tackles and broke up a pass. Grimes was fired by the Dolphins on March 7, 2016, after he refused to restructure his contract. Stephen M. Ross, the Miami Dolphins' owner, later said Grimes was fired in part due to his wife's distracting behavior. During Grimes' time with the Miami Dolphins, his wife had multiple incidents. Miko Grimes was arrested outside Sun Life Stadium in September and assaulted a Miami Herald reporter over a report that casts doubt on Grimes' future with the Dolphins and publicly sluggish quarterback Ryan Tannehill's play. "I knew this stunk the minute we signed to this team," Ryan Tannehill said on Twitter. Grimes later apologised to Tannehill and stated several times to the public that his wife's opinions are their own. His wife spent a post on Instagram describing the Miami Dolphins as "the dumpster fire of AFC East."

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Grimes to a two-year, $13.50 million deal, which includes a guarantee of $7 million.
