College career
Celek played college football for the Cincinnati Bearcats, the first year under head coach Rick Minter and the ensuing three seasons under Mark Dantonio. He received the UC Claude Rost Award (Most Valuable Player) award (Most Valuable Player) and was a second-team All-Big East Conference pick. His four-year appearances were 1,135 yards (a 12.5 average) and 14 touchdowns, with the Bearcats winning their senior year and their sophomore season in the Fort Worth Bowl.
Professional career
Celek was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft, despite not having been invited to the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine. On May 30, 2007, he began a four-year deal with the team.
In 2008, Celek set franchise records for yards in a game with 131 yards in week 9 and receptions in a playoff game with ten people in the 2009 NFC Championship game. He caught two touchdowns in a game against the Arizona Cardinals and 19 catches in the 2008-09 NFL playoffs were the third most tight ends in NFL history.
Since L. J. Smith left through free agency to the Baltimore Ravens in 2009, Celek became the Eagles' starting tight end.
Celek was suspended for excessive celebration after teammate Jason Avant lifted his leg in order to impersonate Captain Morgan's mascot. Following the incident, the NFL quickly terminated what was believed to be a clandestine ad campaign, but any NFL player caught striking the "Captain Morgan" pose on camera during a regular-season game will be given a $10,000 donation to the Gridiron Greats, a non-profit that assists veterans of various challenges after determining the game's end. Celek was not suspended by the league, but it did state that any future occurrence would be punished.
Celek signed a six-year contract extension on December 1, 2009, extending his deal as an Eagle until the 2016 season.
Celek's third 100-yard game of the season came on December 27, 2009, against the Denver Broncos in week 16. His 47-yard touchdown catch was the longest of his career.
Celek was selected to the 2009 USA Today All-Joe Team after a career year with 76 catches (a team record), 971 yards, and eight touchdowns.
Celek also recorded 511 yards and four touchdowns, with a career-long 65-yard touchdown against the New York Giants in week 15, during the Miracle at the New Meadowlands.
As quarterback Michael Vick's favorite target, Celek finished the season with 811 receiving yards. He was one of three Eagle offensive players to start all 16 games, as well as right tackle Todd Herremans and rookie center Jason Kelce. Celek was a passenger in a DUI car accident that killed no one, but no one was injured during the offseason.
Celek had 57 receptions for 684 yards and one touchdown on the season.
Due to Chip Kelly's trade of Joe Kelly to replace longtime head coach Andy Reid, there was a lot of anticipation going into the season. Celek had 32 receptions for 502 yards and six touchdowns after scoring a touchdown in each of the last two weeks. Celek passed for two touchdowns on three targets for 16 yards in the first round of the playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Celek's ninth appearance in the NFL this season ranked second in three tight end categories, behind career leader Pete Retzlaff in receiving yards (4,050), receptions (322), and touchdowns (26). Despite being the team's starter, Celek only gained 90 yards in the team's first eight games (three of those games had no receptions), mainly for blocking. Celek saw more catches from backup Mark Sanchez as Nick Foles went down due to injury. This was the best showcased in a victory over the Carolina Panthers in which he had 5 passes for 116 yards. Sanchez, who also caught his lone touchdown of the season, on a 1-yard catch against the Giants in Week 17. Celek had 32 receptions for 340 yards and one touchdown, less than half of teammate Zach Ertz's total.
Despite Ertz's reception skills, Celek remained the Eagles' top tight end due to his superb blocking skills. Celek got off to a rocky start in three games, with just one catch on one field for six yards. However, in a Week 4 divisional matchup against the Redskins, he scored his first touchdown of the season, scoring on a 10-yard catch and run. Celek led it up with three catches for 44 yards and another touchdown against the Saints. In a game against the Panthers, Celek only passed for 11 yards, but against the Cowboys he had no passes. Celek did, however, make a crucial block on Dallas' defensive end Greg Hardy in overtime, which allowed Bradford to throw the game-winning touchdown. In a week 10 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, Celek exploded with 4 catches for 134 yards, 7 against the Buccaneers, and 2 catches for 79 yards against the Buccaneers. Mark Sanchez played in all three games and was involved in all three, although Bradford threw 3 of Celek's 4 catches against Miami. Despite only 35 targets, 8th on the team, Celek ended the year with 27 catches for 398 yards (3rd on the team) and three touchdowns (T-2nd on the team).
Celek and the Eagles announced a three-year contract extension on January 26, 2016, with $6 million backed up.
He appeared in all 16 games with 8 starts, receiving 14 receptions for 155 yards, but not touchdowns for the first time in his career.
Celek played in all 16 games and set career lows in catches and yards with 13 receptions for 130 yards, but did not get a touchdown. This was due to Zach Ertz's larger role in the tight end position, and Celek was relegated to back-up and would be rotated occasionally to keep Ertz rested. Celek earned his first championship ring when the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII by 41-33; although he did not have any catches in the game, Celek did have a crucial block that allowed running back LeGarrette Blount to score a touchdown during the second quarter.
Celek was released by the Eagles on March 13, 2018.
Celek resigned from football on August 31, 2018.
Post-playing career
Celek, along with former teammate Darren Sproles, was hired as a staff consultant in the Eagles' football operations division on February 7, 2020.
