Browner was chosen by the Football Writers Association and The Sporting News in 2003 to the Freshman All-America teams. He was named Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year and was a member of the All-Pac-10 second team. With six interceptions and 43 tackles (37 solo), he ranked ninth in the country with six interceptions and 43 tackles (37 percent), two forced fumbles, and three stops for losses as a redshirt freshman. He was instrumental in the program's weather during Dennis Weathersby's departures in 2002, Calvin Carlyle, and Terrell Roberts' departures.

In 2004, Browner received an All-America and All-Pac-10 Conference award from The NFL Draft Report. He lining up at the right cornerback and has frequently faced the opponent's top receiver. Professional career

In 2005, Browner was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Denver Broncos. Browner fractured his left forearm against San Francisco on August 20, 2005, and he missed the entire 2005 season before being waived on July 24, 2006.

In 2006, Browner was signed by the Calgary Stampeders. In his time with the team, his speed and combat effort made him a fan favorite. He was named a CFL All-Star for the season after winning the 2008 Grey Cup with Calgary. After the 2009 season, Browner was also selected to the CFL All-Star team.

Browner debuted with the Seattle Seahawks and appeared in every game of the 2011 season. In a win over Vince Young and the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1, 2011, a Seattle-record 94 yard interception return against the New York Giants in a Week 5 victory and two interceptions were included in a game of that season. In 2012, Browner was suspended for four games for breaching the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy by using a prescription drug. Despite this setback, Browner was drafted as a replacement for an injured Carlos Rogers.

Browner was facing an indefinite suspension for yet violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policies, according to the NFL erroneously. He was suspended from participating in Super Bowl XLVIII against the Denver Broncos due to his suspension. The Seahawks defeated the Super Bowl 43-8, giving the franchise their first championship without Browner.

During the time Browner was unsigned by an NFL team and played football in the CFL before the Seahawks' contract, the suspension was later modified to reflect a drug abuse concern related to missing drug tests. He was officially reinstated by the NFL on March 4, 2014. His suspension was limited to the first four games of the 2014 season.

Browner signed with the New England Patriots on a three-year, $17 million deal on March 14, 2014. Browner was banned from playing in the next two games after serving his 4-game suspension. In week 7 against the New York Jets, where Browner collected a tackle, he made his season debut. In nine games, the Browner finished the season with 25 tackles and an interception. He helped the Patriots win Super Bowl XLIX over his former team, the Seattle Seahawks, 28-24. Browner made three tackles in the Super Bowl. With 26 seconds remaining, he blocked Jermaine Kearse on a pick play on second and goal from the one yard line, allowing Malcolm Butler to make the game-sealing interception.

The Patriots did not receive a $2 million roster bonus due to him, making him a free agent with the ability to sign with any team.

Browner signed with the New Orleans Saints on March 12, 2015. He was voted one of the defensive team captains in September (along with Cameron Jordan). Browner finished with 76 tackles and 1 interception. Browner's season in New Orleans was not a success: he was rated as one of the league's most durable cornerbacks, and he received more penalties for the season than any player in the league since this report began in 1999. Browner announced that the Saints would release him on February 2, 2016. Browner was released on March 10, a year earlier. Browner drew attention in late May 2016 after responding to a Saints fan's critique of his work and salary on Instagram, saying he "took that few millions (and) ran with it" before leaving the Saints.

Browner signed a one-year contract with his former club, the Seattle Seahawks, on April 17, 2016, rebuilding the original Legion of Boom. Browner will play a different role than in the Seahawks' previous stint as a hybrid corner/safety/linebacker in the nickel package, according to Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. On the other hand, the Browners cut Browner on August 29, the team's third preseason game.

Browner was a member of the Roadrunners led by former quarterback Michael Vick as part of the American Flag Football League in 2018.
