Bobby Portis (born February 10, 1995) is an American professional basketball player for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He played college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks and was drafted with the Chicago Bulls' 22nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

High school career

At Hall High School in Little Rock, Portis played high school basketball. Mr. Basketball of Arkansas was a well-known prep player at the time, earning McDonald's and Parade All-American status and being named Mr. Basketball of Arkansas in 2013. Portis became the first in-state McDonald's All-American to sign with the Razorbacks since Corliss Williamson in 1992 and was regarded as a key recruit for coach Mike Anderson's rebuild of the program after committing to Arkansas.

College career

Portis averaged 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game as a freshman at Arkansas. He was recruited to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team and second-team All-SEC.

Portis was named to the preseason All-SEC team and led the Razorbacks to a top-five ranking in their sophomore season. Portis averaged 17.5 points, 8.9 blocks, 1.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game during his second and final seasons. He was one of 20 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award for national college athlete of the year, and one of only two SEC candidates.

Portis' coaches named Portis as the SEC Player of the Year on March 10, 2015. This is the first time an Arkansas Razorback has been selected since Corliss Williamson won the award back-to-back in 1993–94 and 1994–95 seasons. By that time, he was regarded as one of the top players in college basketball in the 2014–15 season and a potential first-round pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

Professional career

The Chicago Bulls selected Portis with the 22nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft on June 25, 2015. On July 7, 2015, he began his Bulls rookie scale job. In the Bulls' 25-point loss to the Charlotte Hornets on November 3, 2015, he scored ten points in his NBA debut on November 3, 2015. Following a quadruple overtime loss to the Detroit Pistons on December 18, 2015, a number of the Bulls' starting five players were exhaustion going into the team's December 19, 2015, match against the New York Knicks. Portis benefited and had his best night of his young career with 20 points and 11 rebounds, with Jimmy Butler and Tony Snell struggling.

The Bulls used their third-year team option on Portis' rookie scale contract on October 28, 2016, extending the deal through the 2017–18 season. Portis was drafted to the Windy City Bulls, Chicago's D-League affiliate, on January 6, 2017. The next day, he was recalled. In a 104-103 victory over the Boston Celtics on February 16, 2017, he had a season-high 19 points. In a 94-87 victory over the Golden State Warriors, he had 17 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. In a 95–86 victory over the Utah Jazz, he scored a career-high 22 points on March 18, 2017.

Portis and teammate Nikola Miroti were involved in a physical altercation during training on October 17, 2017. Miroti was charged at Portis, who punched Miroti in the chest, resulting in him going to the hospital for a concussion and multiple face fractures. The Bulls suspended Portis for eight games a day later. Portis had 21 points and 13 rebounds in a 119–114 loss to the Toronto Raptors on November 7, his first appearance in the season. In a 108-85 victory over the Boston Celtics, he scored a career-high 23 points on December 11, a career-high 23 points. In a 115-109 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, he set a new career record of 27 points to go with 12 rebounds. In a 116–115 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on February 22, 2018, he set a new career high of 38 points. In a 114-109 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 17, 2018, he had 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.

Portis had 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Bulls' season opener on October 18, 2018 a 127-108 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. With a mild sprain of his right knee, he was ruled out for four to six weeks. Portis returned to the lineup after being out for nearly seven weeks and had nine points in 19 minutes in a 108-89 loss to the Sacramento Kings on December 10. He was out for two to four weeks with a right ankle sprain, which had occurred against the Brooklyn Nets the night before. After missing seven games, he returned to action against the Nets on January 6th. In the second half of the Bulls' 105-89 victory over the Miami Heat, he scored 22 of his 26 points on January 30, 22 of his 26 points.

Portis was traded by the Washington Wizards in exchange for Otto Porter on February 6, 2019. In a 119–106 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, he made his Wizards debut two days later, scoring a game-high 30 points off the bench.

Portis joined the New York Knicks on July 9, 2019. When the Knicks decided not to exercise the option on November 19, 2020, Portis became a free agent.

Portis' new jersey was signed with the Milwaukee Bucks on November 26, 2020. In a 143-136 overtime loss to the Houston Rockets on April 29, 2021, Portis scored ten points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and finished with a career-high 4 steals.

Portis was instrumental in the Bucks' 2021 NBA playoffs, grabbing 4 rebounds, and adding 2 steals in a 113–102 road victory. Portis made his first playoff appearance against Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Finals on July 1, 2021, in lieu of an injured Giannis Antetokounmpo. Portis won with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in 36 minutes, despite the crowd's constant shouting of "Bobby." The Bucks won the 2021 NBA Finals 4–2, beating the Hawks 4–2, with Portis scoring 16 points in the deciding Game 6.

Portis resigned with the Bucks on August 6, 2021. For the second year, the contract was worth $9 million over two years, with a player option included. Portis had 28 points and grabbed ten rebounds in a 114-93 victory over the Detroit Pistons on November 24, 2021. Portis won 123-114 over the Rockets on December 10, 2021, after scoring 7 rebounds and blocking 3 shots. Portis played 4 games in the NBA's COVID-19 protocols later this month, but not in the NBA's COVID-19 protocols. In a 137-108 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on February 5, 2022, Portis made six three-pointers and scored a season-high 30 points.

Portis led the Bucks to a 111-81 victory over the Chicago Bulls on April 22, the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs.

Portis used the second-year player option on his existing deal to become an unrestricted free agent on June 29, 2022. Portis re-signed with the Bucks on a four-year deal worth $49 million one day later. On July 6, this deal was finalized at the start of the NBA's free-agency season.
