Blu Cantrell Career

Career

Cantrell was established as a professional backing vocalist for musicians like Sean "Puffy" Combs in the late 1990s. She became a member of the girl group 8th Avenue in 1999, becoming a protégé of singer Teddy Riley. Riley left Blackstreet to reform his previous band Guy, and Interscope Records dropped Blackstreet. Around the time, 8th Avenue had been disbanded. Cantrell was introduced by both a dancer and R&B singer Usher to music producer Tricky Stewart, who is the head of Red Zone Entertainment before long. Stewart had hoped for Cantrell to be a member of his girl group 321, but after a fruitful recording session, he offered to help develop Cantrell's solo career. Cantrell and his partner, Joe Stewart, were immediately enrolled in Atlanta as Arista Records president Antonio "L.A." Reid, who signed the singer and his staff after hearing one song she wrote and performed in front of him and his staff. Reid's bid was the highest in a bidding war with many different names, causing Cantrell to sign them.

Cantrell went straight into recording sessions with Dallas Austin and Stewart, as well as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis after she signed with Arista. So Blu, her debut album, was released in July 2001. Critics generally praised the record, and it became a commercial hit, particularly in North America, where it ranked eighth on the US Billboard 200. Both the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Music Canada later designated it as gold. "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" is the album's lead single. The US Billboard Hot 100 hit Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, putting him at number two. Both in 2002, the album received Cantrell Grammy Award nominations for Best Female R&B Song and Best R&B Song, as well as an American Music Award nomination for Favorite New Soul/R&B Artist. Cantrell appeared in a small cameo role in Charles Stone III's musical comedy-drama film Drumline, where she could be seen singing the American national anthem. On the soundtrack of her 2002 action comedy film Bad Company, her song "It's Killing Me (In My Mind)" was included.

Cantrell's second album, Bittersweet, starred Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, Mike City, Soulshock & Karlin, and Shep Crawford, and Shep Crawford. The album received a favorable response from critics, earning her a Best R&B Album nomination at the 46th Grammy Awards, but it wasn't as popular in the United States, peaking at number 37 on the Billboard 200. The album was a huge hit around the world, where sales were boosted by its hit single "Breathe," a collaboration with Sean Paul. Her highest-charting single to date, it led the charts in the United Kingdom and Ireland's Republic of Ireland, and the top ten of the majority of charts, ranked among the year's top-selling releases. The top-twenty single "Make Me Wanta Scream" was followed by "Breathe" on the radio.

Arista merged with J Records in 2005 and began operating under the newly formed RCA Music Group after the creation of the joint venture of BMG and Sony Music Entertainment. Cantrell's recording contract was up for renewal, and although she was able to resign with the company, the singer decided to leave the firm following her mentor L.A. Reid's departure. She toured extensively as a free agent in the years that followed. Cantrell appeared alongside LisaRaye and Kenya Moore in the musical stage play Gossip, Lies and Secrets, which ran from September to November 2007. She appeared in NBC's Celebrity Circus the following year. Cantrell was the first celebrity to be dropped from the show in the season's second week.

Cantrell revealed in 2013 that she was working on her third studio album on her own. She told Fuse that she was still working on a new album in December 2016.

Despite the fact that the United States hasn't recovered after her one big hit, Cantrell continues to tour Australia and Europe.
