College career

Walsh played for the University of Georgia, where he was a placekicker for coach Mark Richt's Georgia Bulldogs football team from 2008 to 2011. He had a string of good kicks for which he was known as the "Athens Assassin" in the game. He made four field goals in a game three times during his time at Georgia. In a game against Coastal Carolina in his senior year, he tried a field goal from his long, 56 yards and converted it once. Walsh met 184 of 185 PATs and 76 of 103 field goals. However, he made only 21 of 35 field goal attempts in his senior year. He also had two tackles and one of his fumbled back to his reputation.

Professional career

Walsh was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with their fifth pick of the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Walsh, the Vikings' top-ranked draft, will take over kicking duties for the injured Ryan Longwell. Walsh failed only one field goal and had another blocked in the first 11 weeks of the season. On extra point attempts, he was 6-for-6 with kicks over 50 yards and 21-for-21. Walsh defeated Randy Moss for the Vikings' franchise record in points scored by a rookie (119). Walsh tied for the most field goals made from 50 yards or more in his eighth game against the St. Louis Rams in week 15, beating the St. Louis Rams for their eighth kick (a new team record); his three 50-yarders in the game set a new team record; His 5 kicks tied for the most field goals of 37 yards or more in a single game, which only Chris Boniol equaled for the Cowboys in 1996 and Scott Norwood in 1988. Walsh finished with a 56-yard field goal against the Houston Texans on December 23, 2012, his ninth 50+ yarder in a season. In 2005, the 56-yarder tied for the Vikings' longest field goal record set by Paul Edinger.

Walsh made himself 10/10 over 50 yards on the season in his final game of the 2012 season. Walsh has made five out of five field goal attempts on two occasions: week 7 against the Detroit Lions and Week 16 against the New York Giants, with two 50+ yard field goals in each. Walsh was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts following 19 points in Minnesota's 49–17 win over the Giants.

Walsh converted both of his field goal attempts in the Vikings' 20-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers in week 17, giving him a total of 34 made field goals, the most among kickers in the 2015 NFL season.

Walsh was 3-for-3 on field goals against the Seattle Seahawks in the Vikings' first playoff game since 2013, but the Seattle Seahawks failed a game-winning 27-yard field goal in the 4th quarter with 26 seconds remaining. Walsh kicked the football laces and led the attempt wide left, but the Vikings lost the game by a score of ten percent.

Walsh struggled through the first ten weeks of the 2016 season, missing four more points and four field goal attempts. He missed an additional point in a 26–20 Week 10 loss to the Washington Redskins that culminated in his freedom from the Vikings on November 15, 2016.

During his second preseason game in which the Seahawks defeated the Minnesota Vikings, his former team, 20-13, he gained national notice. During the game, he went 2-of-3 on field goals of over 50 yards and converted both extra point attempts. During all of his extra points and field goals, he was seen yelling at Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer and his former Viking teammates for being mocked and screaming profanity at him. Richard Sherman jumped in to show his love and admiration for his new teammate at one point.

Walsh converted three field goals in his Seahawks debut on September 10, 2017.

Walsh was 12 of 13 on field goals and 16 of 17 on extra points before the game against the Washington Redskins, where Walsh missed three field goals in the first half. The Seahawks lost 17-14 on the first round.

Walsh missed a field goal, costing the Seahawks the game 26-24 and costing the team a playoff berth, with less than a minute remaining.

The Seahawks signed former Jacksonville Jaguars place kicker Jason Myers due to Walsh's unsatisfactory results in the 2017 NFL season. "The signing of Myers could be the first step in Seattle reshaping its kicking units in 2018." The Seattle Times said.

Walsh signed with the Atlanta Falcons on August 24, 2019. As part of final roster cuts, he was waived by the Falcons on August 31, 2019.

The New Orleans Saints' James Walsh was signed by Walsh to their practice squad on January 11, 2021, in the case that incumbent kicker Wil Lutz was unable to function during their postseason play.
