Bidisha's elder sister and Vijayeta's younger sister are among her nieces. Basu says that her name refers to "dark deep desire" and that it also refers to a river.
Basu lived in Delhi until the age of eight and attended Apeejay High School. Her family then migrated to Kolkata, where she spent time at Bhavan's Gangabux Vidyamandir, which is located in Bidhannagar. Basu was formally named 'Lady Goonda' in her class and was given the name of the head girl, owing to her short and commanding demeanor.
Basu was spotted at a Kolkata hotel by model Mehr Jesia Rampal, who suggested that modelling be resumed. That year, she competed in and eventually won the Godf Cinthol Supermodel Competition (organised by Ford), thus representing India at the Ford Models Supermodel competition in Miami. She and her then-boyfriend Dino Morea were photographed sultry in the Calida commercial later that day, and there were some demonstrators outside her house after that. Basu started pursuing a career in fashion modeling throughout her twenties before becoming a actress after appearing on many magazine covers.
Acting career
Vinod Khanna, one of the judges of the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel Competition in which Basu participated, wanted to launch her alongside his son Akshaye Khanna in Himalaya, but she felt she was too young and refused the role, which led to Anjala Zaveri. She was convinced by Jaya Bachchan to appear alongside her son Abhishek Bachchan in J. P. Dutta's Aakhari Mughal after returning home. Despite this, the film was cancelled, and Dutta later changed the script and made Refugee with Kareena Kapoor. Basu was also offered a role in Refugee, opposite Sunil Shetty, which she turned down.
Basu made her debut in Vijay Galani's Ajnabee in 2001. The film, directed by Abbas-Mustan, was inspired by the American film Consenting Adults. It was a modest box-office success that attracted unfavorable feedback from critics. Basu's work in a negative role was lauded by critics, who also received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Basu appeared in Raaz, the year's most popular thriller. Basu was established in the Hindi film industry, by Vikram Bhatt. She received raves for her portrayal of a woman who is pursued by a spirit. "It's Bipasha Basu who steals the show with her fine appearance," one Tribune reviewer said. She was nominated for the Best Actress for Raaz by the Filmfare Award. She was lauded for her role in the Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, a moderately critical and commercial success in Sanjay Gadhvi's Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, a supporting role. However, it was also her first commercial setback in David Dhawan's Chor Machaaye Shor. In the Telugu film Takkari Donga, she appeared in a supporting role alongside Mahesh Babu and Lisa Ray. Gunaah, which was announced later this year, was also a box-office failure. She played a cop who adores a convict and strives to reform him. Basu was miscast as the "idealistic cop," according to Variety's Derek Elley.
Basu appeared in Pooja Bhatt's erotic thriller film Jism, which was well received by critics and farewell at the box office in 2003. She played the role of a seductive, vivacious wife of a millionaire who indulges in an extramarital affair with an alcoholic lawyer and plots to murder her husband. According to Channel 4, the film was ranked 92nd in the top 100 sexiest movie scenes poll ever conducted. "The true show stealer, according to film critic Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama, is Bipasha Basu; her seductive deep voice and sarcastic demeanor make her the most female fatale since Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi." Jism was nominated for the Filmfare Best Villain Award by the Academy of Fine Arts. Zameen, her next book, has failed to make a splash among audiences.
Basu's fourth generation was released in 2004, all of which did moderately and attracted mixed reviews. In her first release Aetbaar, she collaborated for the second time with Vikram Bhatt. She played the role of a young woman who falls in love with a psychopath. "... Irma" was the word that prompted Rediff.com to state that "...... The characters are not convincing, and the plot is not fast or interesting." Mani Shankar's Rudraksh, based on the Indian epic Ramayana, was her next film. The film was a failure at the box office and was panned by the critics. She appeared in Rakht as a tarot card reader looking for a murder mystery. "Bipasha Basu impresses in a new light and function," critic Shruti Bhasin of Planetbollywood wrote. Anil Sharma's Madhoshi opposite John Abraham was her last appearance of the year. Her role as a mentally fragile woman was generally well-received.
She appeared in Barsaat, together with Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra in 2005. "She [Bipasha Basu] does not have sparks until the end," Taran Adarsh said. She appeared in Sachein, a Tamil film that was a hit, and then in Prakash Jha's Apaharan, which received the National Film Award for Best Screenplay. She refused to participate in art films during this time due to financial difficulties.
Basu did the video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat, in addition to acting. She appeared in Jay Sean's "Stolen" as a guest.
Basu made a name for herself with the success of No Entry, Company, and Dhoom 2. No Entry grossed 750 million at the box office and was the most popular film of 2005. Basu played a bargirl who appears as the wife of two men. For the film, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by Filmfare. Phir Hera Pheri, Corporate, Omkara, and Dhoom 2 were among her major launches in 2006, which included her role in four major launches — Phir Hera Pheri, Corporate, Omkara, and Dhoom 2 — all having good results both technically and commercially. Phir Hera Pheri's ninth highest-grossing film of the year was the ninth highest-grossing film of the year. She appeared alongside Akshay Kumar in a pivotal role as a con woman who steals ten million from the protagonists. She gave up her glamorous role as a businesswoman with no reservations in using her sexuality to intimidate a competitor company's CEO. Critics lauded her achievement. She was nominated for the second time for the Best Actress Award at Filmfare.
Basu appeared in Vishal Bharadwaj's adaptation of Othello, Omkara, and was a cameo. With her dance number "Beedi," which was extremely popular in India and elsewhere, she captured the public's interest. "Bisha Basu is brought in to lend oomph, and she does a good job doing just that," CNN-IBN analyst Rajeev Masand wrote. In Aditya Chopra's Dhoom 2, Basu became the talk of the town for making a bikini. According to reports, she ate only oranges for three days and trained hard to shoot the scene. "Aah Bipasha!" Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India wrote. Gorgeous, brings back the bikini and Bollywood bikini, and then fades into the shadows as a lovely accessory."
Dhan Dhana Dhana Goal, which was below average at the box-office in 2007, was disappointing. "Billo Rani" a song based on John Abraham and Basu became extremely popular, earning her the name "Billo Rani," although equal credit must be given to Omkara, in which she was Billo Chamanbahar. She joined Abbas-Mustan for Race in 2008, back in 2008. She played Sonia, who is trapped in a love triangle involving two brothers (played by Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna), and she murders one of them along the way, and she executes one of them. The film grossed 680 million at the box office and was the fourth-biggest hit in India this year; it also did well in other countries. Critics applauded her performance, with Taran Adarsh referring to it as "her best work so far." She's a natural performer." Basu's appearance in Bachna Ae Haseeno as a profitable supermodel who finds it impossible to forgive her ex-lover for traying her earned her her second nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, and the film was a commercial success with it becoming a "hit." She completed 2008 by appearing in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi's "Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte" a film.
Aa Dekhen Zara's first appearance at the box office in 2009 did not do well at the box office. Fun Begins by Rohit Shetty's All The Best: Fun Begins did well, and her comedic role was lauded by fans. Basu's Bengali film, Shob Charitro Kalponik, wowed everyone later this year. "I love saris, and I'm wearing a lot of them in Ritu's film," she said. Critics lauded her appearance as she reminiscibly glamorous. Subhash K. Jha, a feminist, spoke out in favour of her. "Bipasha [Basu] puts out all stops to produce her best effort in her career," he said. In tones of cathartic conviction that we never knew existed in Bipasha," she reminisces about her screen-husband's death. Basu's bereavement role can only be equalized by Azmi, according to the multiple award-winning actress Shabana Azmi.
Basu appeared in the 2010 film Pankh as an imaginary character in the protagonist's mind. In Rahul Dholakia's Lamhaa, which investigated socioeconomic and cultural difficulties in Kashmir, she was then included as a Kashmiri girl. Due to the locals' insensitive theme, principal photography of Lamhaa was interrupted several times by the locals. She left the Anantnag sets and returned to Mumbai for the crowd she was afraid of. Bunty Walia considered replacing her with Vidya Balan, but she returned for the shoot later with the necessary security arrangements. "Bipasha sinks herself into her role, giving the character a new sense of humor without resorting to stock expressions," NDTV Movies said. The scene in which she is mauled by militant women is as traumatic to watch as it must have been for Bipasha to fire." Basu's wife later appeared in Priyadarshan's Aakrosh, who assists the police with an investigation into honour killings in their village. She gave mixed reviews of the film. "Bipasha actually has nothing to do," Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India wrote, "Bipasha does not have much to do, and does appear to be miscast as Paresh Rawal's long-addicted, bruised, and battered wife."
Dum Maaro Dum, the company's only release in 2011, did a good job at the box office and received favorable feedback from critics. "My next film release, DMD Dum Maaro Dum, in which I play a lively, colorful, happy go-lucky girl named Zoey, who is the representation of Goa as we see it," she said. Basu worked with Abbas-Mustan for the third time in Players, the first release of 2012. The film was a formal remake of The Italian Job. Players were heavily compared to The Italian Job and was chastised for its execution and results, including Basu.
After a period of relatively weak sales for Basu, Vikram Bhatt's Raaz 3, a supernatural horror thriller starring Vikram Bhatt, received a positive response and emerged as a box office success. The film not only became India's highest grossing horror movie, but also became a "blockbuster" with revenues of 730 million (US$9.1 million). "It's Bipasha who holds the feverish conversations" after her role in the film earned admiration from critics with Subhash K. Jha of IANS. She gives a full performance."
Basu was seen in the horror film Aatma, which was directed by Suparn Verma and produced by Kumar Mangat and Abhishek Pathak, after appearing in a guest appearance in Race 2 where she reprised her role from the prequel. The actress received mixed feedback about the film. In a series of concerts in Birmingham & London in the summer 2013, Bipasha performed live alongside Atif Aslam, Shaan & Malaika Arora Khan for the first time.
Bipasha Basu appeared in many genres of films in 2014. She appeared in Humshakals, a comedy film directed by Sajid Khan opposite Saif Ali Khan. Humshakals were a box office fire. "Humshakals was the worst experience of my life," she said, even though she was "seriously distraught by the end result." She was also seen in Creature 3D, a horror film that was also a box office loss. Basu had completed shooting on her first English film, Roland Joffé's epic drama The Lovers, in which she played a Maratha soldier. The film was released on March 13, 2015. Basu appeared in Bhushan Patel's romance horror film Alone, opposite her future husband Karan Singh Grover in 2015. "Alien television rated the film, saying, "With some genuine scary scenes and Bipasha-Karan's chemistry, Alone stands out from many horrific horror films shot in the past." "Bipasha takes her performance to a whole new degree," the singer added. The film did moderately well at the box office, as it was the film's director.
Basu has committed to staring alongside her husband Karan Singh Grover for the second time in Dangerous's crime drama web series.
