Bill Treacher Career

Acting career

He made his West End debut in 1963 with the comedy Shout for Life at The Valiant Theatre after graduating from the prestigious Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Many other roles in the West End were subsequently successful.

Treacher then delved into television drama, appearing in several classic 1970s series such as Grange Hill, Dad's Army, Bless This House, Minder, The Sweeney, The Employees, Dixon of Dock Green, Z-Cars, and The Agatha Christie Hours.

Treacher was the first actor to be cast in BBC soap opera EastEnders, appearing in the first episode on January 19, 1985 as Arthur Fowler, a role he played for the next 11 years. Tony Holland and Julia Smith, the co-creators, had scripted the story with Treacher in mind. Treacher said in 2015 that he was initially reluctant to sign up for the event because it would take long hours and a lengthy commute from his family's home in Suffolk, but that he later relinquish due to the possibility of a steady income. He received a lot of flak over his role, particularly for his portrayal of his character's mental decay and subsequent nervous breakdown. The character was also marred by two short stints in jail, a continuing fight with jobs, his daughter Michelle's pregnancy at the age of 16, his son Mark's HIV diagnosis, and a midlife crisis in which he almost ended up his marriage.

By 1995, Treacher had requested to be written out of the series, adding: "By the time I finished, the theme music was making me feel sick." I was depressed." He also stated in a 2003 BBC documentary interviewing current cast members of the show that he felt compelled to leave as a result of age. He said that the stress of a long working schedule was affecting his health and that doctors told him that if he didn't leave the job quickly and relax it would kill him.

During the 1970s, Treacher appeared on bit-part television shows several times. In the tough-hitting police drama Selected Target in the Dad's Army episode Menace from the Deep and as Arnold in a comedy series Bless This House, the episode entitled The Phantom Pools Winner was depicted.

Treacher appeared in The Bill, an ITV police drama, in 2006. In an episode of Casualty in December 2007, he also appeared as a security guard.

Treacher has appeared in several films, most notably Pop Pirates (1984), The Musketeer (1998)), Tale of the Mummy (1998)), and George and the Dragon (2004).

Treacher is also a well-known radio actor and appeared in "Bringing Eddie Home" by John Peacock, based on a true story of Eastend couple Edna and Jack Wallace's fight for the rights of British service employees. Treacher appeared as the older Jack Wallace, and the play also featured other ex EastEnders actors Tilly Vosburgh, Edna Doré, Todd Carty, and Joe Absolom.

Treacher appeared in a British television commercial for the Austin Allegro motorcycle in 1973. He appeared in another British television commercial this time for Colgate toothpaste, where he played a grocer. In a British television commercial for Foster's Lager, he was a Beefeater in the Tower of London to Paul Hogan's tourist in 1984.
