Bill Tarmey Life

Bill Tarmey (born William Piddington; formerly William Cleworth-Piddington; 4 April 1941 – 9 November 2012) was an English actor, singer, and author best known for his role as Jack Duckworth in Coronation Street.

He first appeared in the role in November 1979 and has been playing it faithfully from 1983 to 2010.

Early life and education

Tarmey was born in Ardwick, Lancashire, United Kingdom. He and his family moved to Bradford, Manchester, where he was also educated, a few weeks after his birth. Following William's death in 1944 while driving an ambulance at the Battle of Arnhem during the Second World War, his mother Lilian remarried to Robert Cleworth. Tarmey attended the Bradford Memorial School and the Queens Street School (which later became the Philips Park Secondary Modern School). On leaving school, he was apprenticed to his stepfather, who was a licensed asphalt spreader. He has been in the building business for many years.

Personal life

Ali, his future wife, was introduced to him in 1955 in the local youth club. Carl (1966-1976) and Sara (born 1970), the couple married in 1962 and had two children: Carl (1966–2019) and Sara (born 1970). Tarmey suffered with poor health for many years, suffering from a heart attack at the age of 35 and another at the age of 36. He had heart bypass surgery twice, once in 1987 and again in 2002, following another heart attack. Ali and his wife Ali lived in Ashton-under-Lyne. He also suffered from sleep apnoea as a result of respiratory difficulties. Tarmey refused to quit smoking amid his numerous health issues. Tarmey revealed in May 2011 that he would require heart surgery.

Tarmey died in Tenerife from a heart attack on the morning of 9 November 2012 at the age of 71, according to a Coronation Street spokesperson.

Bill Tarmey Career

Career

Tarmey left his career in building construction in 1968 to work as a nightclub singer and entertainer. He took on extra work on Coronation Street, among other things, in order to supplement his income. Despite being wounded by a serious heart attack and a stroke in 1977, Jack Duckworth was eventually offered the role of Jack Duckworth, a character that would go on to become an institution in British soap operas. Since suffering a second heart attack in 2002, which was used as a storyline in Coronation Street, he underwent quintuple bypass surgery in 1987 and had a pacemaker fitted. He also had sleep apnoea, which caused him to stop breathing when asleep.

Tarmey appeared in King Lear (1983), which starred Laurence Olivier in the title role.

In 1992, he was interviewed by Michael Aspel on Coronation Street, where he was the subject of This Is Your Life. He has also appeared on Lily Savage's Blankety Blank.

Tarmey revealed in April 2006, when he was 65, he was considering retirement, sparking letters of retaliation from fans. Due to his numerous health issues, including severe respiratory difficulties, he wanted to leave Coronation Street in 2009. In December of the following year, the show's producers, however, begged him to remain until his 50th birthday. On the 9th of April 2010, he was confirmed that he would not be leaving. "I've had the most amazing 30 years playing Jack," the man continued to say. I've met some amazing people and traveled around the world as a result of him. "I'll be sad to say goodbye." Tarmey's departure was postponed until the 8th of November, 2010 episode due to his declining health; in this episode, Jack died asleep in his chair in a manner similar to Vera's death (although Jack had a storyline illness). Tarmey was the second longest serving male actor on the program.

Tarmey admitted in a March 2011 interview with Nigel Pivaro that he had to leave the show because his son Carl had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2009.

Music career

Tarmey was a natural performer and has released many albums. Four of his albums, A Gift of Love (1993), Time for Love (1994), After Hours (1996) and In My Life (2001), as well as three singles charting on the UK Singles Chart, appeared on the UK Albums Chart. Tarmey's biggest hit single was a recreation of Barry Manilow's "One Voice" by Tarmey, who performed with the St Winifred's School Choir and producers Stock & Waterman, 1980s hitmaking production team Stock Aitken Waterman. After its success, Tarmey's one-off release would debut at number 16 on the UK singles chart for BMG's Arista label, with Tarmey committing to more music after signing a deal with EMI.

A CD titled The Coronation Street Album was released in 1995 to celebrate the program's 35th anniversary, with cover versions of contemporary artists and standards. Tarmey appeared on "The Coronation Street Single" version of Monty Python's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," as one of Bill Waddington's back vocalists. In December, this single became the number 35 hit.

Jack Duckworth and Me: My Life on the Street and Other Adventures, Tarmey's autobiography, was released in 2010.
