August William Ritter (born September 6, 1956) is an American politician and lawyer who served as Colorado's 41st Governor from 2007 to 2011.
Before his 2006 election, he served as the district attorney for Denver as a member of the Democratic Party. Ritter was the first native-born individual to be elected Governor of Colorado since 1975, as well as the first Democratic officeholder to serve in the Colorado General Assembly with a Democratic majority.
Ritter did not run for a second term in 2010.

Early life
Ritter was born on a farm in Aurora, Colorado, with 11 brothers and sisters; he was the sixth oldest. Ethel and August William Ritter were his parents. He attended Gateway High School in Aurora when he was a student. He attended St. Anthony Catholic High School in San Antonio, Texas, from 1970 to 1972.
He went back to work full time in the construction industry and joined a local labor union when he was 14 years old. Before college, he worked in the building trades.
Ritter earned a bachelor's degree at Colorado State University and then pursued a degree at the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder. He had earned his Juris Doctorate by 1981. He was recruited as a Deputy District Attorney in the Denver District Attorney's Office that year.
Career in law
Ritter took up a position in the office of the United States Attorney's in 1990. Two years later, he returned to the Deputy District Attorney's office. Ritter was first appointed as Denver's District Attorney in 1993. As DA, he created one of the nation's first opioid courts, as well as fighting white collar crime in metropolitan Denver. He specialized in the investigation of sexual assault and domestic violence, as well as criminals targeting senior citizens.
Following the September 11 attacks, Ritter advised US Attorney General John Ashcroft on domestic affairs.
Post-gubernatorial career
Ritter has been the director of Colorado State University's Center for the New Energy Economy since February 2011.
