Bill Pinkney Life

Willie Pinkney (August 15, 1925 – July 4, 2007) was an American performer and singer.

Pinkney was often thought to be the last living original member of The Drifters, who rose to international prominence with numerous hit records.

He was primarily responsible for the early sounds of the company.

The Drifters have a major influence on soul, rhythm and blues, as well as rock and roll music.

Bill Pinkney, a 1988 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with The Drifters, was an original group member.

Early life

Willie Pinkney was born in Dalzell, South Carolina, and Pinkney grew up singing his favorite song, gospel, in his church choir. He was raised in a Christian home and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at a young age, as well as Mount Olive AME Church. In World War II, he served in the United States Army. He received a Presidential Citation with five service stars (for battles including Normandy and Bastogne under General Patton). Pinkney, who had returned from war, began to perform in various gospel choirs. There, he met and merged with the Drifters' original members.

Bill Pinkney Career

The Drifters' solo career and reformedation.

In 1958, George Treadwell, the group's boss, fired all of the individual Drifters and recruited all new artists, The Crowns, formally known as the Five Crowns, naming them under the Drifters' name. Pinkney was forcibly to leave. Pinkney formed the Original Drifters, a group made up of key members of the first (1953-58) association. Original Drifters by Pinkney were extremely popular in the Southeast United States. Their music was a staple of the "beach music" movement for decades.

President Bill Clinton and President Nelson Mandela of South Africa acknowledged Pinkney's contributions. Pinkney has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Award, and the Beach Music Hall of Fame, including the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.

He was selected for the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame and given a "key to the state," which officially declared May 14 as Bill Pinkney Day. Sumter, Bamberg, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, all present their "key to the city" to Pinkney. The United States Senate and the House of Representatives recognized him. Pinkney received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Music from Coastal Carolina University in 2002.
