Roy Haylock (born June 27, 1975), also known as Bianca Del Rio, is an American drag queen, comedian, actor, and costume designer best known for winning RuPaul's Drag Race's sixth season.
In June 2019, Del Rio was named one of the top ten Most Powerful Drag Queens in America by New York magazine.
Early life
Haylock grew up in Gretna, Louisiana. He is of Cuban descent on his mother's side and Honduran descent on his father's side. He is the fourth of five children. He began designing costumes for plays at West Jefferson High School. After high school, he decided to live in New York City, where he spent nine months at Bloomingdale's before returning to Louisiana.
Career
Haylock has mainly worked as a costume designer. At the age of 17, he received a Big Easy Entertainment Award for Best Costume Design for Snow Queen. He has been nominated for 13 Big Easy Entertainment Awards for costume design, with six of whom have been voted. Haylock has also created costumes for the New Orleans Opera.
Haylock began acting as a drag artist in New Orleans in 1996. Lisa Beaumann, the local drag queen, saw him in the play and later cast him in shows at the Oz nightclub. Haylock was named New Orleans Gay Entertainer of the Year for three years as drag queen Bianca Del Rio.
For Southern Decadence XIX, Bianca Del Rio was selected as co-grand marshal, alongside Pat "Estelle" Ritter and Rick Thomas.
Haylock immigrated to New York City after Hurricane Katrina and spent time as a costumer for several shows, ballet, and opera, having worked for Barbara Matera, Ltd. In cabaret with Lady Bunny at XL Nightclub, he appeared in drag as Bianca Del Rio, including in cabaret with Lady Bunny at XL Nightclub. Patricia Krentcil, also known as "Tan Mom," was one of the notable events at the roast.
Haylock appeared in the first regional production of Rent (following its initial Broadway closing) at Le Petit Theatre in New Orleans, portraying Angel opposite Christopher Bentivegna as Collins.
In 2010, Del Rio was featured in the gay.com web series Queens of Drag: NYC. Dallas DuBois, Hedda Lettuce, Lady Bunny, Mimi Imfurst, Peppermint, and Sherry Vine were among the series's fellow New York drag queens. Del Rio appeared on One Night Stand Up: Dragtastic in 2011. Bianca Del Rio, one of 14 drag queens in RuPaul's Drag Race's sixth season, was revealed in December 2013. She became a front-runner among the contestants and a fan favorite, eventually making the top-three. Del Rio was crowned the winner of the sixth season over runners-up Adore Delano and Courtney Act on May 19, 2014. She was the second winner and fourth contestant to reach the final of the tournament without having to lip sync for the first time, and she was the first contestant in the series to make it to the end of the season without ever placing low or in the bottom of a challenge. Del Rio is also the first Hispanic winner of RuPaul's Drag Race.
Del Rio was named as the lead in the independent film Hurricane Bianca, written and directed by Matt Kugelman in 2013. The film was funded by an Indiegogo campaign, which was sponsored by Fractured Atlas, a non-profit art services group headquartered in New York City; the campaign raised over $30,000. In 2018, a sequel called Hurricane Bianca: From Russia with Hate was published. As of February 2019, Hurricane Bianca 3 will be in production, and it will feature Sykes, Dratch, and several Drag Race actors.
Del Rio has written and toured several stand-up shows, including The Rolodex Hate (2014), Not Today Satan (2015–16), Not Today Satan (2017–2021) and Unsanitized (2021-2022), among others. She has also appeared on the Werq the World Tour as a host alongside other Drag Race queens.
In the hit West End musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie, Del Rio starred as former drag queen Hugo Battersby/Loco Chanelle in 2019. A panel of judges from New York magazine named Del Rio first on their list of "the most influential drag queens in America" in June 2019, a list of 100 former RuPaul's Drag Race contestants. It was revealed in November that she would return to the role for 12 weeks beginning December 9. During the UK Tour of the musical, she will reprise her role on select dates in 2021-22. Del Rio appeared in Everybody's Talking About Jamie as Miss Haylock, whose name was based on Del Rio's actual last name.
